JDBC Realm on Apache

I've gotten standalone Tomcat (3.2.3) to do form login
authentication using a JDBC Realm quite nicely.  When
I have Tomcat hooked up to Apache, though (using
ApacheModJServ.dll ajpv12), the authentication doesn't
happen.  Is it possible to have JDBC Realm login via
Tomcat on Apache?  If not, does Apache have a similar
mechanism available?
