Thanks Rob, I tested your file on iOS 5 and iOS 6 Simulators - same results (failure), so this is not an iOS 6 specific issue.
I verified that on Cordova 2.5.0 everything works as expected, so this seems to be a Cordova 2.6.0 specific bug.
