attaching proposed test POC. I think simplifying the test setup helps with clearer tests and expectations, but this means I had to refactor the existing code a bit. For now patch only has tests (failing ones too), not fix, this is just to validate the approach. further work would bring in a fix and more tests.
Besides the fact that I've reproduced the original issue (see {{testPrePrepare}}), I think there's another issue here with the lease mechanism during reindexing (see {{testPrePrepareRexindex}}, I'll fix the name in a future iteration).
