Get the node before update

hi,
can anyone tell me if dbxml is locking the node while updating any file
or it's taking lock on the whole document(dom) itself? can anyone give
any help to get hold of the node before the updation of it. any pointer
is welcome.

It will lock the whole document when it goes to write it out. It really 
isn't ideal, we need much better capabilities here.
