[GitHub] [airflow] Bertusian opened a new issue #15807: Ubuntu Server 20.04 VM docker-compose up airflow-init & docker-compose up produces airflow command error
Bertusian opened a new issue #15807:
URL: https://github.com/apache/airflow/issues/15807
**Apache Airflow version**: 2.0.2
**Environment**:
- **Cloud provider or hardware configuration**: Guest: VM 4GB RAM, 33 GB disk space , Host: Windows host with high specs
- **OS** (e.g. from /etc/os-release): Ubuntu VERSION="20.04.2 LTS (Focal Fossa)"
- **Kernel** (e.g. `uname -a`): Linux ubuntu2004 5.4.0-73-generic #82-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 14 17:39:42 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
**What happened**:
Came from an installation based on the Puckel image, which was super easy. Struggling for days to get the official Airflow image working. Following the steps in the Quick start > Running Airflow in Docker page (https://airflow.apache.org/docs/apache-airflow/stable/start/docker.html#initializing-environment):
- Pulled down the pre-made docker-compose.yaml file (https://airflow.apache.org/docs/apache-airflow/2.0.2/docker-compose.yaml)
- Ran docker-compose up airflow-init within the same directory as the docker-compose file
**What you expected to happen**:
The latest stable official airflow docker image to be pulled, and airflow-init to complete successfully.
**How to reproduce it**:
Followed the instructions 'quick start' (https://airflow.apache.org/docs/apache-airflow/stable/start/docker.html) to pull down the docker-compose.yaml file, and then attempt to run docker-compose up airflow-init.
mkdir ./dags ./logs ./plugins
echo -e "AIRFLOW_UID=$(id -u)\nAIRFLOW_GID=0" > .env
docker-compose up airflow-init
**Anything else we need to know**:
See output after executing the command `docker-compose up airflow-init`.
```
Hi Jarek,
I forgot to mention, but the application does indeed work.
- 'docker-compose up airflow-init' gives some warnings but ends at bash prompt.
- 'docker compose up' doesn't. It keeps on generating the output mentioned here above (like in a loop) but never finishes at bash prompt. The only way to stop it was by pressing Ctrl-C. Then all the containers are stopped, as showed in the output, and the containers are not there when doing 'docker ps'. But when i reboot the guest OS, the containers are there and up and running and Airflow webserver (http://localhost:8080/ ) is reachable. The example dags also seem to work.
So actually I got the application working, but is was just wondering why 'docker compose up' doesn't arrive back at bash prompt, or do I need to wait much longer? What is the recommended way to come back to bash prompt?
Thanx for your reply.
Apparently i missed some crucial information about docker-compose up and it's default logs flag.
Many thanx!
This is how `docker-compose up` works.
https://docs.docker.com/compose/reference/up/
You can run it with `--detach` flag if you want to run the containers in the background but by default it show logs from a all containers and does not go to the background.
It stops.in case of running the 'init' command because it actually exits after it finishes the job.
```
The docker-compose up command aggregates the output of each container (essentially running docker-compose logs --follow). When the command exits, all containers are stopped

Have you actually tried to connect to Airflow webserver (http://localhost:8080/ as stated in the output) when you run `docker-compose up` @Bertusian ?
The user is airflow/airflow by default.
Docker compose up is NOT supposed to exit. It continues to run when you start 'docker-compose up` so there is nothing strange in what you see there.
When you run it you will continue to see the logs, and yes. the ide gunicorn workers will be restarted periodically - this is how gunicorn is configured in the prod image by default.
The warnings will be gone in they upcoming Airflow 2.1. They are just that - warnings.
