[Bug 120268] New: Program Crash when creating new file or opening
existing file.
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=120268
Priority: P3
Bug ID: 120268
Assignee: ooo-issues@incubator.apache.org
Summary: Program Crash when creating new file or opening
existing file.
Severity: critical
Issue Type: DEFECT
Classification: Application
OS: Windows 7
Reporter: joed@rfengineers.com
Hardware: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Version: AOO 3.4.0
Component: ui
Product: word processor
Upgraded from 3.3, Program previously worked fine.
Within a few seconds of creating a new document I get a document recovery
dialog listing "Untitled 1" as Not Recovered Yet. (Due to an unexpected error,
OpenOffice.org crashed....) If I try to recover the dialog screen grays until
I give up and try to close [X], at which time I get an "Open Office is not
responding" message from the OS.
I get similar results when I open an existing document, I see the document
briefly, then the Document Recovery Dialog appears. If I cancel the recovery I
am returned to the existing document. I can edit and save that doc, but when I
close and attempt to reopen I again get a Document Recovery Dialog.

Since updating to Apache OOo, I too am constantly getting a crash. This can
happen when opening a spreadsheet or even just starting the program.
The window that comes up is titled - 'OpenOffice.org Document Recovery'
with this following statement
'Due to an unexpected error, OpenOffice.org crashed. All the files you were
working on will now be saved. The next time OpenOffice.org is launched, your
files will be recovered automatically.'
As with Joe's explanation the dialogue says "Open Office is not responding"
Is it the OS or the program??

This looks like
bug 120086
bug 120068
bug 119733
bug 119804
bug 120154
bug 120185
Try (re)moving the file registrymodifications.xcu in your user profile.
If this does not work, try removing the whole user profile folder.
The user profile is usually in C:\Documents and Settings\<your account
name>\Application Data\OpenOffice.org\3\user. It is a hidden folder. Rename
that file and restart Apache OpenOffice, including the system tray
Quickstarter.
The file registrymodifications.xcu will be then re-generated (note that this
may cause some settings being lost).
The file registrymodifications.xcu may have confidential information, like your
name, surname, address, telephone numbre, etc. That's why I don't ask you to
attach it to this bug report, but if you want, you can send it to the private
mailing list ooo-private@incubator.apache.org where it will be kept privately
(this list is not archived on the internet). This will help us to try to
reproduce your bug and so try to find a fix.

Ariel, I did as you recommended to remove the registrymodifications file. So
far this has worked. Thank you!
