Why am I getting those emails? (was: FW: MODERATE for lucene-net-user@incubator.apache.org)

Hi folks,

Even though I have subscribed to Lucene.Net mailing list, when I submit an
email to "lucene-net-user@incubator.apache.org" I am still getting an email
like the one below and it won't appear on the Lucene.Net mailing list until
when I "approve" it. How come?

Regards,

So does a timeout ("sorry, your message has not been acted upon by the
moderator after 10 days"). But it's OK - the From: address of that
response is the -help address, so if a spammer harvests that it's no big
deal. Most spammers use unreplyable From: addresses anyways.

Reject or ignore spam?

Posted by Craig L Russell <Cr...@Sun.COM>.
Hi George,

 From the http://apache.planetmirror.com.au/dev/committers.html:
I am a moderator and receive these "MODERATE" emails.

First look in the mail and check if it is spam (or other severely
misguided mail). If it is, then just ignore the mail and it will
bounce after 5 days, or reply to the -reject address in the mail header.

If you *should* ignore spam for the reason you give below, perhaps
this section should be edited...

After reading http://www.apache.org/dev/committers.html#mail-moderate I will
now ignore spam emails.

This said, I disagree with you on if I send a reject email it will tell the
spammer that it's a valid address. The fact that the spammer's original
email wasn't rejected by the mail server is an indication to the spammer
that the email address is valid. No?

Actually, you generally just want to ignore spam. After a few days ezmlm
will just remove it from the pending queue. Rejecting it sends a reply,
which tells the spammer that it's a valid address.

Hi Brett and all,

OK, I believe I got it now (at least I tested it and it works.)

I had to reply to the subscription email and not send an email to the
"accept-" one -- this is to fix my problem of why when I send an email to
the list I am still getting the "accept-"/"reject-" email.

For those other emails that I am getting with "accept-"/"reject-" I have
been reply to them based on their content: spam I'm rejecting, others I'm
accepting. From now on, I have to send an email to the sender and ask them
to subscribe if they want to post.

It's making sense now. Thanks!
