------- Additional Comments From psmith@apache.org  2007-01-09 16:43 -------
Verified locally, I think the build.xml target that builds the osx package is
simply not copying the required zeroconf jars in.

I'll make a change, and recreate the DMG and upload it to a location so that you
can verify it for me, if that works, I'll update the downloadable package.

Thanks for reporting it!

Try running the Console application in OSX, it's usually sitting in
/Applications/Utilities/Console.

Java programs stdout/stderr generally go here, if they're not writing directly
to a real console. Console also allows you to view other system logs as well,
so be sure to browse around the different logs to see if you can find the one
that Chainsaw is writing to, but I'm pretty sure 'console.log' is the one to
look in first.

cheers,

Paul

I think the log4j-zeroconf.jar is missing. After copying it to the
Chainsaw.app/Contents/Resources/Java folder it works.

If I quit Chainsaw (Menu Chainsaw -> Quit Chainsaw) the "Shutting down" progress
bar appears, but the bar is not "moving", it stays gray.

The only way to exit Chainsaw is to kill the process. Clicking on the Chainsaw
icon in my Dock still shows "Quit", not "Force Quit".

Only one single event is logged while trying to quit:

Logger: org.apache.log4j.chainsaw.LogPanel
Message: "writing colors to file: /Users/mburger/.chainsaw/chainsaw-log.colors"

I use the Java Webstart version of Chainsaw, my Mac OS is 10.4.8.

Hmm, works for me, via Webstart (Java 5) under 10.4.8. Do you have any
receivers connected at the time of quiting?

Do you have the "Confirm Exit" preference set? I wonder if there is a model
dialog asking you whether you want to quit, but it is hidden somehow. Some
model dialogs under Java aren't quit as "sticky" to the front. If this is the
ase, the exit confirmation screen won't appear under Expose either, so you might
need to try using a hotkey to cycle between windows of Chainsaw just in case.

Turn on the Java console and see if there's an uncaught exception - I actually
had a similar problem for the first time on Windows tonight..the console left
this msg - you may be getting the same error. I wasn't able to reproduce it though.

Try this build:

http://people.apache.org/~psmith/Chainsaw/chainsaw-20070110.dmg

This is the result of the following change to the build.xml process for creating
the osx bundle:

Index: build.xml
===================================================================
--- build.xml   (revision 448404)
+++ build.xml   (working copy)
@@ -375,7 +375,8 @@
                <copy file="${webstart-dependant-receivers.jar}" todir="iSaw-dist"/>
                <copy file="${log4j-chainsaw.jar}" todir="iSaw-dist"/>
                <copy todir="iSaw-dist">

                        </fileset>

This change has 2 benefits, it syncs the osx distribution with the jars used by
the Webstart bundle (cleaner), and also has the advantage that these jars that
are bundled are signed with my certificate.

Let me know how you go, if this works, I'll update the download link.
