http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=39820

Summary: Giving the proxy (some) https support
           Product: JMeter
           Version: 2.2
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: other
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P2
         Component: HTTP
        AssignedTo: jmeter-dev@jakarta.apache.org
        ReportedBy: cnygaard@google.com

As you know JMeter does not currently allow you to send https requests
through the proxy server. SSL traffic, by design, cannot be monitored
with a proxy. As a substitute, I've come up with a very simple tweak
to enable recording https.

I've added a check box called "Attempt https Spoofing" to the proxy
server. When this is checked, all requests received by the proxy
server are converted to https. The browser is unaware that the proxy
is using https, so the user, instead of connecting to "https://...",
connects to "http://..."

To try to prevent the client from requesting any https pages, when the
spoofing is enabled, all text responses are scanned and the expression
"https" is replaced with "http."

Admittedly the check box makes that line in the GUI rather long.
Also, the image in the user manual will need to be updated.

Wow, incredible timing. You had the exact same idea and you posted it today. I
can see why you thought the thread inspired it. I actually implemented this a
few weeks ago. I just finally got around to making it into a patch today. The
reason I call it "Attempt https Spoofing" and not just "Use https" is that it
goes the extra mile (by replacing text) to try to fool the browser into thinking
it is only talking to an http client.

I've applied the patch to 2-2 branch. thanks again for the generous
contribution. I've added your name to the contributors list
http://wiki.apache.org/jakarta-jmeter/JMeterCommitters?action=show. I forget
the policy on contributor license agreement
http://www.apache.org/licenses/#clas, but it's probably a good idea to fill out
the form and fax it in.

What was the TSS thread? This was just inpired by the fact that Google uses SSL
a lot and didn't have a nice way to record scripts when https was involved.

yeah, the idea has been discussed for quite a while. no one had time to
implement it, so it's been a idea for atleast a year and a half. On behalf of
the developers of jmeter and the users, thanks for the generous contribution.

thanks for the contribution. out of curiousity, was it the TSS thread that
inspired the patch?
