[Bug 5091] New: Remove certain dirs from release distros, make available in other ways

http://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=5091

Summary: Remove certain dirs from release distros, make available
                    in other ways
           Product: Spamassassin
Version: SVN Trunk (Latest Devel Version)
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: other
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P5
         Component: Building & Packaging
        AssignedTo: dev@spamassassin.apache.org
        ReportedBy: felicity@apache.org

This came up on the users@ list, and since I'm partial to my idea I'm making a
ticket for it. ;) Message below:

To be honest, I'd be more partial to removing tools and contrib (and
masses and ...) from the tarball and make them available separately.
It'd be pretty easy IMO.

I believe that the vast majority of people don't use those directories
for anything, and since those directories don't change much and/or are
only used for development, why make everyone download it?

My possibly totally naive view:

masses -- only used for development, so people can do an svn co.
contrib and tools -- link into SVN since generally speaking each of the files in
those dirs are separate from each other, and/or make wiki pages about the files.

My 2 cents worth. Those parts of the distribution only account for about
2% of the total size (masses is by far the biggest part). The whole download
only takes a minute on anything faster than a dial up connection. You would
only save a few seconds per download. Not worth the bother.

to be specific, it's contrib, masses, and tools that have been dropped.

1. does anyone run masses from the tarball, who isn't capable of using svn? I
don't think so, so +1

2. contrib contains:

-contrib/check_spamd
-contrib/mbox-to-check
-contrib/run-corpora
-contrib/run-masses

I'm fine with those being moved, I've never used any of them! ;) check_spamd is
the only one that might be useful to have in the tarball, or in some
well-defined location. I suppose we could provide a link to a
http://svn.apache.org/ URL for that.

3. tools contains:

-tools/README.speedtest
-tools/check_whitelist
-tools/convert_awl_dbm_to_sql
-tools/desc_length.pl
-tools/mboxsplit
-tools/sa-stats.pl
-tools/speedtest
-tools/split_corpora
-tools/sysreport
-tools/test_extract

some of those are definitely used by non-SVN users -- maybe we should include
links to their locations in svn.apache.org, prominently, on the website/wiki.

Actually, the "link to svn" idea for those scripts may not be a viable option.
there's currently strong discussion going on in ASF lists regarding having clear
dividing lines between svn/nightly-snapshot tarballs (for developer use) and
release tarballs (for general use, which are +1'd by PMC). if we encourage
users to download from svn.apache.org, that may not be viable.

perhaps it'd be ok to encourage downloads from a specific label, which is always
synced to the most recent +1'd release.

4. have you checked for documentation that mentions those scripts in a way that
insinuates they're still in the tarball?

Just ran a test:

The original:
-rw-r--r-- 1 felicity fame 1280911 Nov 22 22:34 Mail-SpamAssassin-3.2.0.tar.gz

The new:
-rw-r--r-- 1 felicity fame 1164587 Nov 22 22:52 Mail-SpamAssassin-3.2.0.tar.gz

or a savings of 115k, ~9% of the original, which makes me happy so I'm
committing it:
Sending MANIFEST
Sending MANIFEST.SKIP
Adding build/parse-rules-for-masses
Deleting masses/parse-rules-for-masses
Sending t/meta.t
Transmitting file data ...
Committed revision 478457.
