RE: TilesServlet deleted

If a Commons Tiles product bundled a servlet (and/or a filter), as we do with Commons Chain, then I'm sure that people wanting to use Tiles with JSF could just use that one.

Anytime you're ready to volunteer, Matt, just say the word :)

Again, Struts sub-project? It can always move later, to Jakarta or even
a TLP.

Thanks for taking this on, Ted. I'm swamped with my "day job" at the moment,

What bottleneck? There were problems with the 1.1.2 distro so it died in
alpha; those issues should be fixed in the 1_1_2 branch (HEAD is for
1.2.0). 1.1.3 can be cut anytime; care to volunteer :-) ?

Once we bring Chain down from contrib, I'd like to bring that one over here.

I am planning to do a "generic" sample app for Commons Chain. Doing the Struts one first was simply a convenience.

It would be great if we could get the Commons Validator stabilized, so that we can cut 1.2.1, and then move onto 1.3.x.

The Validator bottleneck is starting to feel like the 1.1 Death March again :(

Of course ... but it's also important to recognize that, under the Apache License, anyone can "run off" with the Tiles code anytime they like. They would have to call it something other than "Tiles", but everyone is welcome to make use of the code. :)

Feelings are important, but what is most important is who is willing to do the work. The best way we can express our feelings about Tiles is to continue to create or maintain the codebase ourselves, or encourage others to do so.

I do hope that anyone pursuing Tiles as a separate distribution would care most about how the Tiles community feels, which would include many Struts Committers (myself included). :)

Poor choise of words, perhaps. I mean that I think a Jakarta subproject for
Tiles is a good idea, and that I would be supportive, as in +0, of Tiles
enthusiasts making such a move. I am specifically not interested in being
one of the Tiles committers, for a variety of reasons.

> Otherwise, we should leave the decision to those who will do the work.

That's fine as far as it goes, but since it's currently part of the Struts
code base, I think the existing Struts committers should be allowed to
express an opinion on whether or not they think it would be a good idea for
some group of people to run off with part of that code base. Hopefully that
group of people would care, at least to some degree, about how the Struts
committers feel about that too. ;-)

I agree that bringing these things together might create some synergy,
especially for folks building web application. However, we'd want to be
careful about pigeon-holing these components, since most of the ones listed
above are also useful outside of web applications.

Craig once mentioned the idea of a Web Applications Commons, where we could share components like Tiles and Validator, and whatever might come up for JavaServer faces.

Another likely suspect might be Velocity Tools. This component has utility outside of Velocity. I believe the Scriptable Actions reinvents VelTools to an extent.

Struts Velocity applications are also consumers of Tiles these days, as well as the Validator as well. It wouldn't take much to make these available to Velocity apps outside of Struts as well. Along with JSF apps, of course. :)

Bringing components like Chain, Resources, Tiles, Tools, and Validator together might create some synergy. These are all things that more than one web application framework (or just plain application framework) might use.

It could be another project, or just a grouping within Commons, or even a Struts subproject, depending on who wanted to be involved and how they felt about it.

That was my initial reaction as well, so I went off to look at the Commons
charter, and discovered that it doesn't actually preclude components like
Tiles. Commons also doesn't currently have anything quite like Tiles,
though. It does have Jelly, which has (its own flavour of) tag libraries,
and Chain has a Struts app in there (which I'm not all that happy about,
because of the cross-dependency, but that's another thread).

> I would support moving it into

I think that probably makes more sense, and would support that too. I
thought of Taglibs, but then Tiles is about more than just tag libraries.

IMO, commons is the wrong place for Tiles. I would support moving it into
