FOSDEM (and ApacheCon) Proposal for DeviceMap

Hi,

Beside the CFP for ApacheCon US which is still said to be open till
November 8, there was just a call by FOSDEM:
https://fosdem.org/2013/call_for_main_speakers.html

As it's based in Brussels, even if travel support was somewhat restricted
(e.g. like DevoXX where only the actual conference is sponsored to most
speakers) I could present there. Anybody else interested?

Both days are open to these topics, and given the WURFL issues, even all 3
or at least 2 of them could be covered by a talk about DeviceMap[?]

   - *Embedded and Mobile*
   - Free Java
   - *Legal Issues*

Any other volunteers?

Our jira project is at https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DMAP, and
we can get a moinmoin or confluence wiki if needed.

I hope so, too. Beside actual code commits, I'd hope we get a more lively
discussion on the actual repository and how to store/maintain it.

   - Flat files (basically similar to OpenDDR now)
   - A sort of repository similar to Maven/Ivy, etc. (files underneath may
be simlar, but e.g. modularity or patching could be handled more easily
   than now)
   - A more dynamic approach similar to OSGi (at least for Java servers,
though I'm sure, .NET has such technologies or OSGi ports, too)
   - Another type of repository like JCR (something especialy Adobe and
former Day operations should be extremely comfortable with[?])
   - Some form of Services, ideally REST/JSON calls, that I believe was
already mentioned, but not further outlined except when we briefly spoke to
a JBoss Mobile RichFaces lead in Prague in September.

Just a few ideas to get a discussion started.
Beside this mailing list, either a Wiki or JIRA could also work for this
kind of stuff.

Cheers,
Werner

Thanks - I did submit a talk related to DeviceMap, that's not been
accepted at this point. A few talks are usually kept in reserve in
case a speaker cannot make it, but considering there's no other
mobile-related content announced at [1] I guess the chances of having
that other talk get in are slim.

There's usually FastFeather talks for which one can sign up late, if
there's some progress in DeviceMap until then I might do one.

Congratulations, looks like you got a talk at ApacheCon, though it hardly
sounds related to DeviceMap[?]
Or do you have more than one talk, they mentioned that list was just the
"highlights"?

I'd say go ahead - I already have a few trips to the US planned for
2013 and I'm not looking for more at the moment.

Bertrand/all,

This may be rather short notice, but I just got an email reminder by
O'Reilly about its Fluent conference:
http://fluentconf.com/fluent2013?imm_mid=09d494&cmp=em-code-newsletters-dec6-direct

I just recently proposed DeviceMap for a similar series of conferences
dedicated to Web and Mobile Development in Germany (German speaking
content) so I was wondering, if you'd prefer to do so at this event, or
consider a joint proposal or should I do so?

As I proposed a special talk on Mobile Gaming and the problems most games
are facing today, I especially intend to do that for Fluent, given Gaming
is in its scope.

The focus might be more on PhoneGap which (as usual[?]) is
even explicitly mentioned, but I wouldn't say, DeviceMap and similar
frameworks aren't crucial for Mobile apps e.g. if you use HTML5 (most
platforms render that from their language of choice, not many people do
plain static HTML[?])
The gaming topic sounds quite relevant, especially for games that are
simply scripted into native apps using PhoneGap and other cross-generators.

We are using dClass (https://github.com/TheWeatherChannel/dClass) inside of Varnish3 to do our device detection. Currently running the latest OpenDDR (1.12). We started integration with OpenDDR about this time a year ago. One of our requirements was that it had to run in our caching layer (Varnish) and it had to be very performance centric. We had already developed a similar API to do detection against WURFL. So when WURFL changed its licensing, we looked at other options and OpenDDR turned out to be a stronger product. Haven't looked back since.

Reza,

Thanks a lot for the update and offer to help. While this was not maintained on OpenDDR so far, having some form of references or "Who is using it" on a voluntary basis could also raise awareness and confidence in DeviceMap.

You mentioned C, are you using the C# version of OpenDDR, the Java version or both for that duration?

Please let me know if you need any assistance in getting any of these tasks started. Weather.com has been a "long time" (almost 1 year now!) user of OpenDDR and we are really looking forward to DeviceMap.

Thanks,

I'm working on the committer ID, but I believe, the initial API contribution by OpenDDR was already committed to the DeviceMap repository.
Hopefully we can get the ball rolling in the Repository area, too.

There's been interest by AeroGear team (who already uses PhoneGap/Cordova) to look into DeviceMap for their server-side "Controller" part of AeroGear.

I have submitted a talk proposal for ApacheCon NA 2013, where I'd
describe the server-side and client-side detection features that I've
been working on this year. Hopefully we'll have all this nicely
wrapped in DeviceMap by February when the conference happens (but I'm
unfortunately busy with other stuff right now).
