We've also experienced this during our Drill 1.6 evaluation when querying parquet files.  Unfortunately a showstopper for us due to the heavy use of INT_8 and INT_16 in parquet.

SYSTEM ERROR: UnsupportedOperationException: unsupported type: INT32 INT_8
