Trying to invoke an external task

I am trying to invoke a C complier from my ANT script, and getting the following error:

Here is the script
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>             
                                                        
<project name="MyProject" default="init" basedir=".">   
  <description>                                         
     Compile C Code                                     
  </description>                                        
                                                        
  <property name="build" value="build" />               
                                                        
  <target name="init">                                  
     <exec executable="/bin/sh">                        
         <arg value="-c" />                             
         <arg value="c89" />                            
     </exec>                                            
  </target>                                             
                                                        
</project>                                              

Here is the error message:

BUILD FAILED                                                                  
file:/u/iocxsdm/ant/ascii.xml:11: Could not create task or type of type: exec.
                                                                              
Ant could not find the task or a class this task relies upon.

Have you considered the cpptask task from the ant-contrib project?
