japanese characters

Hello,
What is the best way to handle japanese or foreign characters when using
xalan?
Using xerces i can create XML documents which contains foreign characters
fine.
I can even apply a stylesheet to these and everything works ok.

However, i transform that document to a new filtered document, using xalan
and try to apply a style sheet to the new filtered XML document...then i get
errors stating invlaid characters....
