How to publish Images into PDF documents?

I can NOT create PDF document with images.

I have created an XML document which contains links to images (PNG).
When I publish HTML document from XML everything is OK.
When I publish PDF document from XML I dont see images.
When I publish PDF document from XML using command line 
then everything is OK (FOP is newer).

My Suggestions:
 - that version of FOP in Cocoon does NOT understand PNG images;
 - or FOP does NOT work correctly with relative pathes;
 - or I do something wrong.

And second question:
how can I trace all messages (error, info, debug) have been generated 
by FOP?
