[jira] [Created] (ACCUMULO-3319) Convert some tracing spans to timeline annotations

Billie Rinaldi created ACCUMULO-3319:
----------------------------------------

Summary: Convert some tracing spans to timeline annotations
                 Key: ACCUMULO-3319
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ACCUMULO-3319
             Project: Accumulo
          Issue Type: Task
          Components: trace
            Reporter: Billie Rinaldi
            Priority: Minor

Htrace supports timeline annotations for spans, in addition to key-value annotations. A timeline annotation has a timestamp (between the start and and stop times of the span) and a description. We could convert some of our spans to timeline annotations to reduce inserts into the trace table. It would also be useful to analyze and reduce existing spans where stop time equals start time, which presumably are not giving us much information.
