Strange behaviour with OpenOffice 4
Hallo.
I am encountering a strange behavior with OpenOffice 4 and the attached
xls file.
If I open it with OpenOffice 4 it does not show the cell values but if
I open it with OpenOffice 3 or MS Excel it does show the values correctly.
If I select the same file by browsing the folder from "File - Open" menu
of OO4 I can see in the preview the values but when I open it the values
are not shown.
If I open the file with Excel and save another copy without making any
change, that copy is correctly opened with values with OO 4.
The xls file is created by a program that extracts values from an ERP
systems.
Any idea about how to solve the problem?
Thank you.

G'day!
I am using AOO 4.1.0 on a Windows 8.1 computer. I loaded your .xls
spreadsheet into Calc and the values transfer correctly. Perhaps your
problem is caused by something in the extraction process.
Good luck

you may have customise openoffice's settings in some unusual way which causes the problem. try resetting all the settings to defaults by renaming your user profile. to detect the profile, open 'tools - options - openoffice - paths'. the profile is the '...\openoffice\4\user' folder where autocorrect, autotext, backups, gallery and graphics reside.

Still nothing received.
I've been thinking more about this.
o Do the column headers appear?
No value is displayed but I see some cells with gray background on the
second row of the worksheet (not on the first row as it should be). But,
the column H does not have this gray cell.
o Do the grey and yellow background colours appear?
No cell with yellow backgound. Some cells with gray backgound on the
second row as written above
o If you select a cell that should show a value, what do you see in the
Input Line?
Nothing is displayed in the Input line, the cells looks empty.
o If you double-click a cell (or press F2), can you the select hidden text
within the cell by dragging the cursor?
No, the cell look empty
o I notice that the font colour is (generally) set to Black; what happens
if you change it to Automatic?
I tried to change the color to Automatic buy nothing is displayed yet
o What happens if you select the sheet and change the font? Or change the
font size to something smaller?
I have tried different options for font and size but nothing is displayed.
I trust this helps.

Hallo.
I have installed OpenOffice 4.1.0 but the problem still exists.
AOO410m18(Build:9764) - Rev. 1589052
2014-04-22 11:43:54 (Di, 22 Apr 2014)
I attach some screenshots of what happens.
As you can see the values contained in the worksheet are correctly
displayed in the preview of the File - Open dialog but when I open it they
disappear.
I guess that the preview of the file is managed by Windows and not by
OpenOffice itself and this is the reason why the preview shows correctly
the content.
If I open the file with OpenOffice 3 it shows correctly.
I saw that other users don't have the problem. Could it be a bug of the
italian version?

It appears to open correctly in my OpenOffice 4.1.0 on Windows XP^H^H
mumble-mumble. When you say it does not show the cell values, what do
you mean - that every cell appears empty? Or that something else appears?

Doesn't that at least identify the problem? If what Excel saves can
be opened but not the original file, then your other program creating
the file is offering something that can be opened by Microsoft Excel
but which is not exactly in the correct format for .xls. It's perhaps
not surprising that OpenOffice might not handle this incorrect file
correctly. Alternatively, the fact that the copy you attached opens
satisfactorily for me without ceremony may suggest that re-saving in
Excel is unnecessary and that merely creating the copy is somehow the
key. Can you open the copy of the file that will have been returned
to you from the list with your copy of your own message?
>Any idea about how to solve the problem?
Since I cannot see anything wrong on my system, unfortunately not.
You could complain to the suppliers of the other program.
I trust this helps.

I downloaded and installed 4.01 on WinXP (it's the only version of
Windows I have in a virtual machine right now - sorry can't help with Win8):
AOO401m5(Build:9714) - Rev. 1524958

And the spreadsheet opens and displays just fine for me in in WindowsXP.
