[Issue 126122] New: References are converterted to plain text
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126122
Issue ID: 126122
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: References are converterted to plain text
Product: Writer
Version: 4.1.1
Hardware: All
OS: Windows 8
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P5
Component: formatting
Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
Reporter: wilfried.weigelt@arcor.de
When edition a document and insert a cross reference to an image number and
save the file as Word doc and reopen then the reference is converted to a plain
text.
The same is happening to cross references to the number of a footnote.

04 Test Document in .doc format opened in AOO 4.1.1
This is a screen capture of the first page of the 03 Test Document when it was
reopened with exactly the same AOO 4.1.1 configuration on which it was created.
Note that the Illustration cross-reference lines are now simply text and there
is no field that can be used to link to the corresponding illustrations. The
footnote link is still recognized, and it is clickable.
There are other defects on opening the document as well. Those are unrelated
to the focus of the current defect report and would need to be dealt with
separately.
ABOUT WORKS-FOR-ME-NOT
Although there is a gratuitous warning message on saving the Writer-created
document in Word format, there is no indication that the result preserves
essential features that matter in this given case. In this case, the result is
defective in more than one way.
ABOUT WORKS-FOR-ME
If the .doc file created by AOO 4.1.1 opened with full fidelity in AOO 4.1.1,
there could still be a Works-for-Me case. That is, it works in AOO 4.1.1, but
it doesn't work for someone actually using Microsoft Word.
It is that prospect that makes it very difficult to describe to some who as a
works-for-me situation, what actually is not working when interchange is
attempted. That is what requires this careful attention and generous use of
screen capture utilities.

02 Screen Capture of the Test Document First Page
This image is of the first page of the 01 Test document, after opening it up
separate from the previous save. This image demonstrates that the document is
brought up in exactly the form it appeared when the file was created in a
previous Save operation.
The shading of controlled fields is apparent. All of the cross-references can
be clicked and movement of document presentation to where the targets are
rendered happens smoothly and accurately.

05 Test Document in .doc format opened in Microsoft Word 2013
This is a screen capture of the .doc version (the 03 Test Document) opened in
Microsoft Word 2013 to assess how the saved document arrives in Word.
Note that there is the possibility that the features of interest are actually
reflected in the .doc but do not survive opening of that document back in
Apache OpenOffice. (This sort of works-for-me-not can happen. See the remarks
on attachment 04 Test.)
Here the Illustration links did not come across as anything recognized by Word,
and it is very likely that the feature is simply gone. The footnote 1 link
remains as a feature and there is a pop-up of the footnote in place. The link
is not followable here.
In Word, there are additional defects. The first image, of the hand-drawn
music staff, has over-flowed onto a second page. The other defects shown in 04
Test are also present (i.e., other text and the caption from the first page are
completely covered over by the image).

There is enough in the verification of the produced .doc in comparison with the
original .odt to establish that the defect occurs as reported.

03 Test Document Saved as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) format
This file, CrossReferencingDocument-2015-02-21-1916.doc is the .DOC-format that
was saved from the 01 Test document. No alterations were made. the 01 Test
document as it is seen in early attachments, was simply saved as this
particular .DOC format.
There is the automatic warning that features of the document may not be
preserved, but that happens whether or not features or lost or not.
Without examining the document in one that processes .DOC as a principal
format, it is necessary to at least be able to confirm the document's desired
features by reloading in Apache OpenOffice.

01 ODF Test Document with Illustration and Footnote Fields
This file, CrossReferencingDocument-2015-02-21-1914.odt, was created in Apache
OpenOffice 4.1.1 to demonstrate the kinds of cross-reference fields at issue
with this bugzilla incident report.
There are three illustrations and 2 footnotes. There are cross-references to
the illustrations and to the footnotes (via their initial links, links in the
text, and from one of the footnotes to the other).
This file is the result of saving the file as an ODT (the default format for
OpenOffice Writer). When it is reloaded by AOO 4.1.1, the result is identical
with nothing missing, corrupted, or altered. The cross-references remain
shaded and on being clicked, focus scrolls to the appropriate illustration or
footnote.
