[I] Not visible progrees when you upload files (tooling-trusted-releases)

potiuk opened a new issue, #331:
URL: https://github.com/apache/tooling-trusted-releases/issues/331

Upload of files through UI is very UX-unfriendly. When you select many files, you just see the very small (and invisible really) reload circle circling in the tab of the browser, but otherwise you can't see that anything is happening at all. I already did (when uploading many files) try to upload the same files multiple times thinking that I have not clicked it eventually. or that I did not do something else?

Many of the file-upload sites have widgets that are showing files being uploaded 1-by-1 while they are being uploaded (including thumbnail preview for images for example), so it must be possible to give a better visual feedback that things are in progress.

I would like to add a progress indicator and aim to do so.

An interesting piece of history: Firefox used to have a built in progress indicator for file uploads, but it broke in version 0.9 in 2004. The issue for this, [Bug 249338](https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=249338), is still open after 21 years.

There's a [representative comment](https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=249338#c61) from [Sebastian Lisken](https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/user_profile?user_id=65459) in this thread from when the bug was briefly closed before being reopened:

   > Can you give some explanation why you're closing this bug as "won't fix"? It really doesn't make sense to me why user agents don't display upload progress by default. I do know Upload Progress, but as the developer of a simple file-sharing site (private and for collaboration purposes) I also know how often I need to explain to my users that it should not be the server's task to inform users about the progress of an upload. It's so much more natural for the user agent to do this.

The thread also alludes to IE and Chrome having supported a file upload progress indicator. Why did all three browsers apparently lose this functionality? Uploads are historically smaller than downloads, not performed as concurrently, and do not need to access the local filesystem with write permissions. This combination of factors likely led to the need for this functionality being overlooked. The increasing prevalence of local solutions indicates, however, that the factors are diminishing in importance. I think that Lisken was already justified in making the comment above in 2016, and is even more so now.

Again, despite this, I would like to add a progress indicator to ATR and aim to do so. We do not have the remit to add this functionality to the leading open source browsers, despite that being the proper solution which would advantage all.

When uploading many files rsync is the best way.

BTW. I experienced this even when I uploaded really few files. Namely those: https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/airflow/providers/2025-11-18/

It was at least 3-4 seconds where i wondered "is anything happening"?

Generally some feedback in ~200 ms is considered advisable for all kind of UI interactions - that's a "golden standard" of UX.

Many of the Browser interactions for example make up for it and "pretend" something is happening - such as animating empty tab on click etc. There is a lot of "pretending" in the UX (I learned that when I work in Mobile App development company as CTO and interacted with designers a lot).

So ... it does not have to be even very "progressy" - just an indication that it's "happening" and animated gif is enough in most cases

He, he, in 2008 I **actually** led the whole team of engineers at Google (split between Krakow and Zurich) - in a project called 'Scotty` (as in `Beam me up Scotty !` where we developed the upload component for YouTubeVideo (that time). Including working around lack of web standards for multi-chunked, resumable uploads. We were supposed to do it in the way that was multi-data center capable - uploading and resuming in any of the datacenters, going to sleep and resuming when you closed your laptop, dealing with flaky network issues, and even uploading multiple chunks to multiple locations in parallel and putting them back together on the server side ..... All at Google scale.

... and having a progress bar as well :)

I hear it is in use till today.

So yeah. I know it's not the "easy one". There were 5 engineers in the team.

But I'd still find it useful :)

I have a flexible ProgressBar Python class for use by the command line client. (yes; adjacent to this issue for a web UX)

Yes. I know, but UI is a valid option as well, and for many casual users who rarely do relases is **absolutely easiest** if they do not have pipeline integration.
