[Bug 122556] New: Not excepting Password

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122556

            Bug ID: 122556
        Issue Type: DEFECT
           Summary: Not excepting Password
           Product: Calc
           Version: AOO 3.4.1
          Hardware: All
                OS: Windows, all
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P3
         Component: open-import
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: nellis69@gmail.com
                CC: issues@openoffice.apache.org

Current file was saved with a password.
Right after closing with new password, tried opening the file with current
password and was rejected 'The password is incorrect. The file cannot be open."

We experience this problem before and assumed we keyed incorrectly. However,
after issuing a number of combinations the file opened. We created a new file
making sure of the password. Closed the file and reopened it. Satisfied with
results and new password, proceeded on with life. Yesterday, I open the file
using the new current password, file opened. Closed the file and reopened
again, password was rejected as it was prior. We have tried various
combinations of the password without success.

During the opening process there is a phantom file:
 .~loc.name.ods#
We can only guess the phantom file is a temporary work file and password is
being passed or not passed to it, thus denning opening the file.

Trust me, we have been using OPENOFFICE for an number of years. This problem
occurred sometime over the past year.

We are at a lost. This file consist of passwords to a number of applications
that render us helpless.

--- Comment #2 from Andre <aw...@googlemail.com> ---
The .~loc.name.ods# file is created by OpenOffice to mark the file name.ods as
being locked and to prevent it from being opened twice at the same time and
thus from making different changes in different application windows. The lock
file is removed when the document is closed in OpenOffice. Therefore the
existence of the lock file is an indication that

a) the file is still open in OpenOffice

b) or that OpenOffice crashed while editing name.ods.

Both would explain why the file is not opened

a) to prevent the file being opened a second time (but that should produce a
different dialog message)

b) because the file may be corrupt because OpenOffice crashed while it was
written.

What format were you saving to? ODS? XLS? Something else?

Was there anything unusual about your password? Unusual length? Non-ASCII or
other special characters?

You say that after a few tries you were able to open the one file. Was the
password that worked different from the one you originally entered?

Also, when it fails, is this from the same machine, with the same keyboard?

Finally, watch out for common password issues:

1) Caplocks enabled

2) Keyboard keycaps misplaced (Believe it or not, this is an old office prank.
Exchange two keys on keyboard. When user is touch typing they automatically
press the correct keys. But if they look at the keyboard, maybe when entering
a password, they get it wrong, because they are trusting their eyes not their
touch)
