Incubator release area clean up

Hi,

If there is no objection, in a few days, I'm going to remove the following directories for the incubator release area, as the project have either graduated or retired:

If a product want to remove this themselves, before I get to it, please go ahead.

Which is not teh case for any of the projects here :-)

Hi
/dist/release/incubator/projectxxx May be needed in the short term when a
project just graduated and no available or stable release after being TLP
in the short term.
I suggest we set up a timeline for keeping them in /dist/release/incubator,
and require the PMC team to finish their TLP release, which could make
INFRA easier to clear the /dist/release/incubator of TLPs

For /dist/dev should be safe to clear.

Hi,

Was just a suggestion, but given it not much work to clean this up occasionally it’s probably not needed.

We would need to modify the clutch process, but a happy consequence could be a version to look at the whole of the release directories for the whole foundation.

This *can* be done, without problem. IPMC would just be responsible for
multiple dev/release areas. Not an issue. We auto-generate ACLs for the
areas, so it may take a little work to figure this out, but it's a Simple
Matter of Programming :-)

With that said, and with my Infra hat on, I'd like to see a thought from
the Legal peeps on whether the incubator/ directory structure layout is a
requirement (to supplement the disclaimers). I know there are distinct
opinions about what/how we host releases on our servers.

Hi,

They are not incubating projects anymore it’s fair to assume that they don’t need the /dist/dev area.

If a project has retired then I think it safe to assume they don’t need the release areas either.

If a project has become a TLP we probably need to wait until they have made their next release before removing incubating releases. Hopefully the project itself does this and cleans up after itself but as we can see not all do.

There is a possible alternative and that is to not have a incubating area and have all projects just use /dist/dev/<projectname> and /dist/release/<projectname>. That way no clean up would be needed. The releases still have incubator disclaimers and are likely downloaded from places where it obvious they are incubating projects. But I assume their may be some permission issues with this approach?

Justin

Not wrong at all! .. everything on dist.a.o will be copied over to
archive.a.o. Further, dist.a.o is mapped out of Subversion. So all of those
releases are in there, forever. You can 'svn rm' all the dirs you listed,
and they'll disappear off of dist.a.o. But not from archive.a.o or svn
history.

Discoverability/browsing/trimming/clean (DBTC) is the net effect, of your
proposed change. No data loss.

My request is simply that the DBTC has been found desirable by the
Incubator over the past 15 years, in various forms/amounts, so it would be
nice to see you plant a stake in the ground. Infra can then easily follow
that, without having to wonder/ask.

Correct me if I’m wrong but any releases (in /dist/release) will be archived and any releases in /dist/dev/ no longer need to be there as they are RCs and the like.

Ha! The Infra team was just talking about that today, with the retirement
of Edgent and (cleanup of) Zipkin. Over the years, we've had mixed signals
about what to do with "Incubator releases" after a podling leaves the
Incubator. Some have said "keep them; they are IPMC releases", or "they
should follow the graduated podling to their TLP directories", or "just
remove them".

Could I suggest a paragraph or two, somewhere, to solidify the IPMC's
position?

Hi Justin,

I checked Dubbo and they still refer to all their past releases on dist and not archives on:

http://dubbo.apache.org/en-us/blog/download.html

I think that it is fair that the incubator let current TLPs know that these old releases are going away.

See http://incubator.apache.org/clutch/#other for a list that includes such graduated projects.
