[status] Forrest website awaiting to be updated in a few hours

People on the xml-site cvs-commit list have already seen my messages
passing by, since I have been checking in the latest version of our
website for xml.apache.org inclusion, this time *with* a link to it from
the main pages.

Curious folks might check out
http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/xml-site/targets/index.html
- if you find glaring bugs or mistakes, please indicate so. Normally,
the automated update job will move the new version from CVS to daedalus
in some hours (2-3h IIRC).

Bert, this is also the first real Apache launch of your skin, so kudos
to you and grab that asbestos suit ;-)

BTW - this is not to be considered a release or something alike, it is
just proof of our existence and will perhaps trigger the curiousity of
new Forresteers ;-)

other remark: the width of the linkbar should be fixed IMO - it is quite
annoying if you navigate between tabs

Nope, alas :-(

You need to (cvs) check-in the html result of building our docs into the
xml-site/targets/forrest module/directory, and that is copied every 6
hours to the live site - this is to prevent that everybody needs access
to daedalus to update the website

see attached mail from Sam Ruby, who is maintaining that script

so if you manage to get your grips on the xml-site module (to which you
have commit access, I've just checked CVSROOT/avail), you should be able
to do the site update yourself (and 'enjoy' the old-fashioned way of
updating apache.org websites ;-)

I've spend more than an hour to commit everything needed for the
upgrade, so you're warned ;-)

be careful also not to mess up other project's websites in the process

I am, but I feel responsible for this, so I must solve it. The problem is
probably CSS related. I'll check it out this weekend. If I commit the
change will the cron job take the change to the live site?
If I find the time I'll check out the tab path problem too.

Bert

P.S. My current jobs:
1. getting acquainted with the SAP Enterprise Portal at Interbrew
2. finishing my Cocoon based CMS and getting the next Cocoon job started
3. creating a big offer for a site for a big city (10,000 pages)
4. promoting my search engine optimization course
5. getting the first outlines ready of my cocoon course
6. trying to keep my wife happy because she feels neglected (this is the
toughest one ;-))

yep, I decided to leave those pages in - they still depend on our own
copy of the sources however - but once we get the remote building up &
running and we get agreement for the new skin, that'll soon be solved

Cool, the xml-site tab is a nice hack ;-)

BTW, the pages look quite different on IE6 and on Mozilla...
Basically the problem is that in Mozilla the menu on the left is too big.

Up & running, please cross-check.

I'll adjust where possible. I don't know how the alt attributes got erased
cause I certainly put them there! Most of the remarks are guidelines we
can't follow without compromising the design. For the moment I'll make
sure the page is usable and no severe remarks are given. Once I get the
minimized html version running I'll try to make the site (!)
pass. Shouldn't be that hard.

I'll type out some guidelines on skin creation to be NS4.0+, IE4+, Opera 5+
and lynx compliant.

I've just been browsing our site using lynx and I must say that it looks
considerably better than the other xml.apache.org sites still using the
stylebook look & feel.

But you are right, we are not experts with regards to accessibility so
having a visually challenged person somewhere on board would help

AAMOF, I've been in contact with a study group at the University of
Leuven who has been doing extensive work in that area, so I'll ask them
to check what we have now against their experiences

Oh, I'm pretty fire proof on kritisism as is. I just hope I can solve all
the surfacing problems and keep everybody happy. Getting a visually
disabled person on the committers list would be SUPER. This would *really*
proof that we are on the right track.
After I solved the current CVS and tab problem I'll take a look at creating
different xslt's for different browser versions. I am thinking about a
minimalistic HTML version, a pure html version and a CSS version. The
minimalistic html version will enable people that use enlargers to read the
screen easily.

Ah, dreams of endless seas of time ....
