Here is what worked for me:

 * Apache Spark 1.6.1  without spark.driver.extraJavaOptions=-Xss10m -- StackOverflowError
 * Apache Spark 1.6.1  with spark.driver.extraJavaOptions=-Xss10m -- RUNS FINE
 * Apache Spark 1.6.3  without spark.driver.extraJavaOptions=-Xss10m -- RUNS FINE

Apparently there is some config change between Apache Spark 1.6.1 and Apache Spark 1.6.3 that fixes this issue.
