Summary: Allow comments in PatternSet includesfile and
excludesfile
Product: Ant
Version: 1.6.5
Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: Core tasks
AssignedTo: dev@ant.apache.org
ReportedBy: issues.apache.org@chasmcity.com
There would appear to be no way to add comments to files that are included by
PatternSet includesfile and excludes file.
It would be great to be able to add comments to these files, perhaps using the #
character.

Does anyone have any knowledge of a character that is completely invalid in a
filename for all platforms? Just UNIX and Windows, even, for a start? Most
characters seem usable on UNIX platforms when escaped, so I can't locate a
character that would be a suitable comment indicator for includes/excludes files.

Haven't checked, but isn't this possible already by using XML comments?

Hmm... I haven't checked either, but how would that work? e.g. the
documentation of <patternset> shows:
includesfile the name of a file; each line of this file is taken to be an
include pattern.

I don't think there is one.
Here's a suggestion - add an optional attribute to <includesfile> and
<excludesfile> which instructs the task/type to look for comments in the file.
Then you could use something obvious like the # character, but you have to
explictly enable their use in the Ant script. The defautt would be to treat
every line as a file pattern.
