<h2>Key Question</h2>

<div class="quotation">
<p>In 400 words or less, answer this question: Why is your location and
the date you propose the best for OOoCon 2008?</p>
</div>

<p>Ireland is the second largest exporter of software in the world and as
such is the ideal place to host OOoCon 2008. Not only will you be assured
of Ireland's famous 'Cead Mile Failte' (translates literally as 'One
hundred thousand welcomes') you will also have excellent conference
facilities and huge local support from both the local open source
community, patrons and the Irish Government.</p>

<p>Louth is ideally placed to showcase the economic potential of peace
and political stability on the island of Ireland as it is situated on the
border with Northern Ireland. Both Northern Ireland (UK) and the Republic
of Ireland are represented by this bid and if selected the conference
will further help to replace past hostilities with a strong sense of
community.</p>

<p>This bid has support from many of the Open Source Community groups on
the island of Ireland (Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland) as
well as the Irish Government, DKIT (University) and commercial industry

<h3>Government support</h3>

<p>The Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Dermot Ahern T.D., has
agreed to support the bid for OOoCon 2008 in Louth, Ireland and I have
attached a letter of his willingness to proactively support the
conference.</p>

<p>The Minister said, <em>I am delighted to support this important event
in the global open source calendar. Recent events in global markets
underline the need for all types of businesses and organisations to
ensure their competitiveness and the open standards and technical
innovation promoted by events such as OOoCon are a key strategy in this
area. I would be delighted and honoured to open this event should
Ireland's bid be successful. As one of the largest software exporters in
the world, it is appropriate that we share both our expertise and our
famous Irish hospitality with the open source software community from
around the world at this conference.</em></p>

<p>The location of the conference (Louth is on the border with Northern
Ireland) is also of huge importance and support for the conference has
been organised on a cross-border basis.</p>

<p>The Minister added, <em>As a border county, Louth is ideally placed to
showcase the economic potential of peace and political stability on our
island.</em></p>

<h3>Social</h3>

<p>At the end of a long working day, clocking off comes as a welcome
relief and nobody on the planet knows how to work hard and play hard like
the Irish!</p>

<p>We have a number of once in a life time entertainment options
available to OOoCon attendees:</p>

<ul>
<li>Conference Celebrations in Slane Castle - Depending on availability
we hope to provide Slane Castle as the backdrop for an evenings
entertainment to open or close the conference. This wonderful 17th
century castle is where U2 famously recorded 'The Unforgettable Fire'
album. U2, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Bob Dylan and
others have since played in it's historic Grounds.</li>

<li>Medieval Drogheda - The town of Drogheda will provide a range of
traditional music, pubs, clubs and restaurants to socialise, relax and
unwind after each day of the conference</li>

<li>Adventure Sports - For those of a more active nature a range of
outdoor activities including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, rock
climbing and abseiling will be provided at discounted rates from
<a href=
"http://www.carlingfordadventure.com">http://www.carlingfordadventure.com</a>.</li>
</ul>

<p>For a small country, Ireland has an incredible variety of scenery. As
an island on the edge of Europe we have a fascinating history that
stretches back over 8,000 years. Louth (just 25 minutes from Dublin
Airport) is Ireland's smallest county with some of the most amazing
history and heritage including</p>

<ul>
<li>Medieval Drogheda</li>

<li>Access to Carlingford Lough and the Mourne Mountains (an Area of
Outstanding Beauty)</li>

<li>The Medieval and Norman Heritage Town of Carlingford which over
looks the Mourne Mountains</li>

<li>The Boyne Valley that leads to Newgrange (A UNESCO World Heritage
Site), Slane Castle and the Ancient Hill of Tara where past Kings of
Ireland were crowned</li>

<li>Tours of Belfast will also be available to ensure the hospitality
of all of the island of Ireland is available to those staying a little
longer</li>
</ul>

<h3>Broadband Internet access</h3>

<p>Free WiFi / Broadband access will be available in all Campus meeting
facilities, Hostels and Hotels.</p>

<h2>The Event</h2>

<p>The OpenOffice.org Annual International Conference (OOoCon) is the
premier event for anyone interested in or working with OpenOffice.org.
OOoCon is where representatives of all the community projects meet to
celebrate and learn from the achievements of the past twelve months, and
discuss how to meet the challenges of the next twelve.</p>

<h2>The Location</h2>

<p>Every year, a completely new team adopts OOoCon, brings it to their
country, and puts their own flavour on it. They have a great deal of
freedom in how they run OOoCon, but they can always call on the
experience of past organizers and the central Marketing Project. The
result is a conference which has a lot of fresh energy every year,
guarantees suprises, but which is also reliably interesting. Many
attendees consider it to be one of the most informative and friendliest
open-source events to be found anywhere in the world.</p>

<h2>The Choices</h2>

<p>OOoCon is the Community's conference, so it's only right that the
choice of where it is held lies with the <a href=
"http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/guidelines.html">Community
members</a>. <em>If you were a registered Community member on 1st January
2008, you are entitled to vote</em> for the location where you would
prefer to attend Conference. If you know you won't be able to attend,
<strong>please don't vote</strong> - we want OOoCon to be held where the
maximum number of people can attend.</p>

<p>Teams were asked to provide information in a <a href="cfl.html">Call
for Location</a>. Their replies have been presented in the same format to
make it easy to compare one with another. Some teams have provided more
complete answers than others.</p>

<p>There are six locations to choose from this year:</p>

<ul>
<li><a href="amsterdam.html">Amsterdam</a>, The Netherlands</li>

<li><a href="beijing.html">Beijing</a>, China</li>

<h2>Key Question</h2>

<div class="quotation">
<p>In 400 words or less, answer this question: Why is your location and
the date you propose the best for OOoCon 2008?</p>
</div>

<p>The city of Orvieto, with its 21,000 inhabitants, is one of the most
charming cities of art in Italy. Located in Umbria, in the heart of
Italy, it's 100 km far from Rome and 140 km from Florence and easy to
reach by plane, train and car.</p>

<p>It is a center for courses leading to university degrees (Informatics
and Telecommunications Engineering), post-graduate courses (Architecture,
Health Psychology, Archaeology), as well as specialization courses of
prestigious Italian universities.</p>

<p>The plateau with its tufa cliff walls defines the area of the
historical center of Orvieto â a stupendous palimpsest of Etruscan,
Medieval and Renaissance structures. The city is known for its efficient
congress facilities and a qualified service network for hospitality.
Restaurants, wine and champagne bars and pubs offer a variety of the fine
wines and foods for which Orvieto is famous. These features together with
the intact environment, pleasant climate and a system of alternative
mobility make the city ideal for meetings, seminars and study days of all
kinds.</p>

<p>Not by chance Orvieto, world capital of good living (âCittaslowâ), has
hosted important national and international appointments: Slow Food World
Congress, Hydrogencities foundation (with J. Rifkin) and it is site of
prestigious cultural events during the year which include Umbria Jazz
Winter, Barzini Award for the special correspondent (in collaboration
with the Corriere della Sera), the International Award for Human Rights,
outstanding Art exhibits, Conventions and post-graduate studies of
American universities.</p>

<p>The political-administrative context is particularly favorable for the
diffusion of open source culture. Umbria â the region in which Orvieto is
located â was one of the first Italian regions to approve a law on
âinformatics pluralismâ and to have instituted (L.R. n. 11 of 2006) a
Center of Competence on Open Source that works to favor the introduction
of open source software in the Public Administration and in the schools.
This year 80 projects will be financed, 60 of which plan for the
introduction of OpenOffice.org in the local institutions, 4 are projects
from Orvieto.</p>

<p>The Municipal Administration totally supports the candidature of
Orvieto as an OOoCon2008 center, already translated into precise
commitments for logistic and organizational collaboration.</p>

<p>We would like to introduce some changes with the OOoCon2008. The most
important is to hold an Italian session, in parallel with the normal
international ones, in order to attract more people from our country and
promote the OOo adoption.</p>
<hr />

<h2>Mandatory Information</h2>

<h3>Location (country, city, conference center/university)</h3>

<p>Two structures are at disposal for the organization: The Palazzo del
Popolo Conference Centre and the Palazzo dei Sette. They are both located
in the heart of the city, within walking distance from the main hotels.
They are all equipped with wireless-lan (for each participant),
amplification systems, audiovisual systems for projection and recording,
teleconferencing systems.</p>

<p>Every speech will be recorded in audio and video and a videostreaming
service for the OOoCon will be setup.</p>

<p>Several rooms will be available for public and private group
meetings.</p>

<p>Structures are close together and located in the city center where
people can walk around and enjoy several pubs, restaurants and shops
available.</p>

<h3>Proposed Date(s)</h3>

<p>October 1-2-3, 2008</p>

<h3>Team Lead (main contact person)</h3>

<p>Diego Frascati â OrvietoLUG and Davide Dozza (Associazione PLIO)</p>

<h3>Local events that are taking place in parallel (or right
before/after)</h3>

<p><a href="http://www.smau.it/english/index.asp">SMAU International
Exhibition of Information & communication technology</a> October
15-18</p>

<h3>Special visa or entry requirements, e.g. vaccinations</h3>

<p>Italy is part of the Schengen Agreement. People traveling from outside
of Schengen Area have to verify if they need a visa.</p>
<hr />

<h2>Optional Information</h2>

<h3>Large local OpenOffice.org deployments (for user keynotes and success
stories)</h3>

<p>As the OOo adoption in Italy is a bottom-up process, the small
organizations are the most active in OOo migrations. Anyway several
regions are migrating to OOo (e.g. Regione Toscana, Regione Umbria) and
many others smaller PA (municipalities).</p>

<p>Interesting experience is the Chamber of Deputies which are migrating
to OOo and Desktop Linux.</p>

<p>Another interesting experience is the COSPA Project which director,
prof. Succi, kept a presentation as keynote speaker at OooCon2005.</p>

<h3>Names of local OpenOffice.org developers (for developer
sessions)</h3>

<p>Paolo Mantovani and Giuseppe Castagno are the best known developers in
Italian community. Anyway we don't exclude the participation of other
people.</p>

<h3>Names of local OpenOffice.org vendors/partners (potential
sponsors)</h3>

<ul>
<li>Umbria Region Open Source Competence Center - CCOS Umbria</li>

<li>Municipality of Orvieto</li>

<li>Large OOo contributors like SUN, IBM, NOVELL, etc.</li>

<li>Local IT companies delivering OOo services which are numerous in
Italy</li>

<li>Some local sponsor offering local products for example in food</li>

<li>Bank foundations and institutional agencies<</li></li>
</ul>

<h3>Travel costs</h3>

<h4>By plane</h4>

<p>Low cost flights landing at Roma Fiumicino and Roma Ciampino are also
available. International Airport Leonardo da Vinci (Rome Fiumicino) is
about 130 km far from Orvieto. From Fiumicino Airport, Trains âLeonardo
Expressâ run every day, every 30 minutes from 6:37 a.m. to 11:37 p.m. and
take you directly to the Roma Termini Train Station in 35 minutes.
Ciampino Airport is about 150 km from Orvieto. From the airport buses
take you directly to the Roma Ciampino train station. From here take a
train to Roma Termini.</p>

<p>Orvieto is very easy to reach by train from Rome. For more
information, please visit the website <a href=
"http://www.adr.it">http://www.adr.it</a>.</p>

<p>To facilitate SUN's OpenOffice.org developers and other groups: Bus
transfers from meeting points (i.e. Fiumicino airport and Ciampino
airport) to Orvieto will be organized.</p>

<p><strong><em>Please note the Call for Papers closed on 18th

<p>The OpenOffice.org Community invites potential speakers to submit
proposals for papers for OOoCon 2008. Whether you are a seasoned
presenter, or have never stood up in public before, if you have something
interesting to share about OpenOffice.org - we want to hear from you.
Please note the Conference language is English.</p>

<h3>A unique occasion</h3>

<p>OOoCon 2008 will see the biggest concentration of OOo developers ever
assembled in one location on this planet. For this reason, we
particularly welcome proposals from developers with information to share
with fellow developers, from how to get started with simple extensions,
through to the deep, dirty, and downright technical aspects of hacking
the OpenOffice.org codebase.</p>

<p>Papers are also welcomed on any topic of interest to the Community: to
the thousands of people who have joined one of our Projects and design,
develop, maintain, translate, test, document, support, promote, or in any
other way help us bring OpenOffice.org's products and services to the
world. As this is the first OOoCon to be held in Asia, we encourage local
communities to submit papers for a special feature on local success
stories.</p>

<h3>Types of Session</h3>

<p>A <em>presentation</em> is a general discussion of some topic,
including (but not limited to) the software, the community, relationships
with other software or communities, and political or philosophical
issues. Presentations should be limited to 50 minutes (including
questions and answers).</p>

<p>A <em>workshop</em> is a "hands-on labs." session, in which the
presenter takes the audience step-by-step through a task, or provides
hands-on tuition for audience in a classroom format. Presenters may
request extended workshop sessions up to half a day in duration for
complex tasks (e.g. how to set up a build environment).</p>

<p>A <em>BoF (Birds of a Feather meeting)</em> is an informal gathering

answer questions from the audience (usually submitted in
advance).</p><a id="bursary" name="bursary"></a>

<h3>Travel Bursaries</h3>

<p>As this is the first time OOoCon has been held outside Europe, we are
will be offering bursaries to speakers to help defray the costs of
attending. A bursary will consist of free room-only accomodation in a
conference hotel, plus a lump sum contribution of Euro 500 towards travel
expenses.</p>

<p>Each request will be considered on the basis of both merit and need,
so if you need a busary to enable you to present your paper, please give
as much information as possible to help us evaluate your request.</p>

<p>To minimise bank charges, our preferred method of giving bursaries
will be in person in Beijing (in any combination of Euro, US Dollars, or
Yuan). However, in cases of financial hardship the organisers may at
their discretion pay bursaries in advance. If you are awarded a bursary
and would like it paid in advance, please apply with your reasons to
<a href="mailto:pj@openoffice.org">the conference organisers</a>.</p>

<p>We would like to encourage everybody to explore other sources of
funding, even if they are awarded a bursary. If you are awarded a bursary
and no longer need it, please notify the organizers ASAP so they can use
the funds to allow another contributor to attend OOoCon.</p><a id=
"template" name="template"></a>

<h3>Presentation Materials</h3>

<p>An OpenOffice.org Impress template recommended for use for the
