[commit] Text selection fixes

I have committed fixes/changes to text selection (see log below).

There is still a single pixel vertical line left behind after
deselecting selected text.  Don't know why yet.

I also have a threaded version of thumbnail but may not be able to
commit later today (CVS connectivity falls off sharply in the afternoon).
