[D] Missing option to select number of rows per page [superset]
GitHub user Yisel-Hernandez created a discussion: Missing option to select number of rows per page
Hi everyone,
Since upgrading to Superset 6.0, I noticed that in the new Table chart it is no longer possible for end users to select the number of rows displayed per page, as was possible in the previous version. Instead, there is now a “search” field and server-side pagination.
Is there any way to re-enable or configure the option for users to choose how many rows to display per page?
In some use cases, this was a very useful feature for navigation and data exploration, and its absence has impacted the user experience.
If this was an intentional change, is there any recommended workaround or best practice to achieve similar behavior?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the screenshot and details — this helps narrow it down.
The **`page_length` control does exist in the code** and its visibility logic is correct (it should appear when server pagination is off) [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/plugins/plugin-chart-table/src/controlPanel.tsx#L499-L513). However, there's a key detail: **`page_length` and `server_page_length` are in different sections** of the control panel:
- **"Server Page Length"** is in the **Query** section (near the top)
- **"Page Length"** is in the **Options** section (further down)
Version 6.0.0 has a **known scrolling bug** in the Explore control panel that can prevent you from scrolling down to the Options section where `page_length` lives. Several fixes for this were merged in April 2026 [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/pull/39160) [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/pull/39211) — addressing resize observer issues and missing `overflow: auto` / `max-height` constraints on the panel.
**To verify this is the issue:**
1. Try scrolling down in the control panel to the "Options" section — the "Page Length" control should be there when server pagination is disabled
2. You can also try resizing your browser window or the panel to see if more controls become visible
3. Open browser DevTools (F12), search the DOM for `page_length` — if the element is present but just out of view, that confirms the scrolling bug
**To work around this for now:**
- Try expanding your browser window or zooming out (Ctrl/Cmd + minus) to make more of the control panel visible
- If you can access the "Page Length" dropdown in the Options section and set it to a specific value (e.g., 10, 20, 50), the rows-per-page selector should appear in the rendered table
**For a proper fix**, you'll want to upgrade to a newer Superset release that includes the April 2026 scrolling fixes. These patches add proper flex layout constraints to the configuration panel so all sections are scrollable.

<!-- Answer -->
That's an interesting symptom. I dug into the source code, and the visibility logic for these controls is actually correct — `page_length` is configured to show when server pagination is **off**, and `server_page_length` is configured to show when server pagination is **on** [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/plugins/plugin-chart-table/src/controlPanel.tsx#L499-L511) [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/plugins/plugin-chart-table/src/controlPanel.tsx#L399-L410). So what you're describing shouldn't happen based on the current code.
A few things worth checking:
1. **Are these the same control?** When server pagination is enabled, the control that appears is actually called **"Server Page Length"**, not "Page Length." They look very similar but are separate controls. When you toggle server pagination off, "Server Page Length" disappears and "Page Length" should appear in its place — but it may render in a slightly different position in the control panel, so it could be easy to miss.
2. **Try a hard browser refresh** (Ctrl+F5 or Cmd+Shift+R) or test in an incognito window. There are some known cases of stale control panel state in the Explore view [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/37444#issuecomment-3878699832).
3. **Check the in-chart dropdown vs. the control panel.** The "Page Length" setting in the chart editor sidebar (left panel in Explore) is a *configuration* control for chart creators. The page size dropdown that end users see *inside the rendered table* is a separate component (`SelectPageSize`) and has its own visibility conditions — it only renders when `initialPageSize > 0` and data exists [[4]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/plugins/plugin-chart-table/src/DataTable/DataTable.tsx#L167). Even if the control panel setting works, the in-chart dropdown can still be hidden if page size resolves to 0.
4. **Confirm your Superset version.** Versions 4.1.x had significant pagination bugs that were only fixed in 6.0.0 [[5]](https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/31626#issuecomment-3279368337). If you're on an earlier release, upgrading may resolve it.
If after checking these the "Page Length" control is truly missing from the Explore sidebar when server pagination is off, this could be a bug — possibly related to control panel re-rendering or stale state. In that case, it would be helpful to share:
- Your exact Superset version (Settings → About)
- A screenshot of the control panel with server pagination toggled off
- Any browser console errors
That would help confirm whether this needs to be reported as a bug.

<!-- Answer -->
Thanks for the follow-up! This is likely caused by how the **`page_length`** setting interacts with Superset's auto-pagination logic.
When `page_length` is left at its default (not explicitly set), Superset auto-calculates whether to paginate based on your dataset size [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/plugins/plugin-chart-table/src/transformProps.ts#L438-L452):
- If `rows × columns > 5000` → paginate at 200 rows/page (dropdown appears)
- If `rows × columns ≤ 5000` → no pagination, `pageSize = 0` (dropdown is **hidden**)
The page size selector is only rendered when `initialPageSize > 0` [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/plugins/plugin-chart-table/src/DataTable/DataTable.tsx#L167). So for smaller datasets, the dropdown won't appear at all unless you explicitly configure it.
**To fix this**, in the chart editor (Explore view):
1. Look for the **"Page Length"** control in the Data panel (it should be visible now that server pagination is off)
2. Explicitly set it to a value like **10**, **20**, or **50** instead of leaving it at the default
3. Save the chart
Setting `page_length` to `0` means "show all rows" and will also hide the dropdown, so make sure to pick a positive number [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/plugins/plugin-chart-table/src/controlPanel.tsx#L505).
If the "Page Length" control itself isn't appearing in the chart editor even with server pagination disabled, that could point to a different issue — let me know and I can dig further.

<!-- Answer -->
The "rows per page" selector wasn't actually removed in Superset 6.0 — it's conditionally hidden when **server-side pagination** is enabled on the chart. When server pagination is active, you see the search field and server pagination controls instead of the traditional page length dropdown.
**To restore the traditional "rows per page" dropdown:**
1. Edit your Table chart
2. In the chart configuration panel, find and **uncheck** the "Server pagination" option [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/plugins/plugin-chart-table/src/controlPanel.tsx#L386-L411)
3. The `page_length` control will reappear with options like 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 rows per page [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset-frontend/plugins/plugin-chart-table/src/consts.ts#L25-L32)
4. Save the chart
When server pagination is **disabled**, the client-side "rows per page" selector is visible to end users as before.
**Trade-off to be aware of:** Client-side pagination has a max row limit of 100K rows (`SQL_MAX_ROW`), while server-side pagination supports up to 500K rows (`TABLE_VIZ_MAX_ROW_SERVER`) [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/config.py#L978-L981). So if you're working with very large datasets, server pagination may still be preferable despite the different UX.
It's also worth noting that a bug in 4.1.x where the page size dropdown didn't work correctly was fixed in 6.0 [[4]](https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/31626#issuecomment-3279368337), so if you disable server pagination, the rows-per-page selector should now function properly.

Hi @dosu, thanks for the suggestion.
I already disabled the "Server pagination" option, but the rows-per-page dropdown is still not appearing.
Is there any additional configuration I should check, or could this be related to Table behavior?

<!-- Answer -->

<!-- Answer -->

<!-- Answer -->

<!-- Answer -->

In my case, the "page length" control only appears when I enable server pagination. However, when I disable server pagination, the rows-per-page dropdown does not appear at all.
So currently, the dropdown is never available in the expected way. Also, the dataset contains a large number of records, so pagination should be applicable.
In this situation, is there anything else I should check or configure? Or could this be a bug?

I am currently using Apache Superset 6.0.0. I’m attaching a screenshot of the Data configuration panel for the chart. As you can see, I only have the "Server page length" option available, and not a general "Page length" option as you mentioned.
Additionally, when I disable server pagination, all pagination controls disappear entirely, and the rows-per-page dropdown does not show up.
Could you please clarify if this is expected behavior in this version or if there is something else I should check?
