[VOTE] Apache Tapestry 5.3.4

I've created and uploaded a release of Tapestry 5.3.4, ready to be
voted upon.

The source and source downloads are uploaded to:

http://people.apache.org/~hlship/tapestry-releases/

and the Maven artifacts staged to:

https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachetapestry-021/

Please examine these files to determine if the new release, 5.3.4, is ready.

I've also created a 5.3.4 tag in Git:

https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf/tapestry-5/repo?p=tapestry-5.git;a=commit;h=8ca386898dd0d61582da02088624f0f399045cad

Vote will run for three days; On a successful vote, I'll release the
Maven artifacts,
and move the source and javadoc distributions from these directories
to the proper distribution
directories and update the Tapestry site documentation, and send out
appropriate notifications.

Not necessarily. We just need to make extra clear that it's the source that we release and not the
binaries. Of course it would be extra thorough but not necessary if we stick to Apache's policy of
releasing source and providing the binaries as an extra service to our users.

Yes, that would be best. The Maven builds (using the Apache parent at
least) drop those files into the META-INF folder for both the source and
binary jars.

Looking at the jars staged in Nexus, they appear to all be missing those
files in META-INF.

Interesting.

So, perhaps we should modify the Gradle build to package each module's
LICENSE.txt and NOTICE.txt files inside each JAR, say inside the
META-INF folder?

I would say so.

From the page Uli linked to:
http://www.apache.org/legal/src-headers.html

Does the policy apply to binary/object files, such as executables or JAR
files?

Yes. Even if there are no source files within the release, the LICENSE
file and NOTICE file are still both required within every ASF
distribution -- whether the unit of distribution is a .jar, .msi,
.tar/.?gz, .zip, .exe installer, or any other file format used for
distributions. For example, Windows .exe files must not be used as a
unit of distribution unless they are installers and include the LICENSE
and NOTICE files in their installation.

We use tags to identify the revision that we created a release from. So if we tag something 5.3.4 we
should be able to recreate that exact release.

I don't see any real harm in going forward with a release. It seems that we didn't miss to attribute
anything were attribution is required and we aren't including any non-al-compatible sources. If
Howard however wants to he can declare the vote failed, re-create a 5.3.4 release with the proper
license and notice files and try again.

Re: [VOTE] Apache Tapestry 5.3.4

Posted by Ulrich Stärk <ul...@spielviel.de>.
That's not a convincing argument. If you decide to cache unreleased artifacts from a staging
repository instead of waiting for the actual release, you will have to live with the consequences.

Re: [VOTE] Apache Tapestry 5.3.4

Posted by Dmitry Gusev <dm...@gmail.com>.
-1 also since 5.3.4 already cached in our maven repos, so I'd prefer 5.3.5
release (or some other different version number) instead.

I'd prefer not to skip 5.3.4 right to 5.3.5, is that ok with everyone?
I'd rather throw away *this* 5.3.4 and vote on a new 5.3.4.

No, we do not.

Source is what we release and vote on, binaries are there as a convenience.

Nope; we vote on the binaries. Really invalid to vote on binary A but
ship binary B, even for something as minor as this.

If I have time this afternoon, I'll update the fix to include LIC/NOT
in source and binary JARs and the retag that as 5.3.4, generate new
release, etc., and restart the vote.

release the binaries as is and mention in the release notes?

Ulrich Stärk: -1 (binding)

tapestry-beanvalidator
tapestry-func
tapestry-javadoc
tapestry-jmx
tapestry-jpa
tapestry-json
tapestry-kaptcha

Are all missing LICENSE and NOTICE files.

One reason for the existence of the PMC is legal oversight to protect developers from litigation due
to IP and license issues. Some of our dependencies might require us to attribute them to their
original authors, others may simply be incompatible to the Apache License and our users need to know
about that. See [1] for details.
