[users@httpd] a lot of defunct processes and messages in error_log

I'm getting a lot of these:

[Mon Aug 11 11:40:48 2003] [info] server seems busy, (you may need to
increase StartServers, or Min/MaxSpareServers), spawning 8 children, there
are 0 idle, and 11 total children

and a lot of these:

nobody 19869 0.5 0.0 0 0 ? Z 11:42 0:00 [httpd
<defunct>]

so I'm just wondering if there a formula for determining the proper
StartServers and Min/MaxSpareServers based on load. Is it common to get
large pursts of spawned servers and then have them defunct themselves?

Thanks
-jeremy
