We used to have {{--work_dir}} default to somewhere under {{/tmp}} and changed it due to the unpredictable {{/tmp}} behavior MESOS-5064. But the truth is that the same is true for many/most of our filesystem state. We don't expect files to go missing. We should have a default that's not {{/tmp}}, either by requiring a flag to be specified as the root for all of Mesos' default filesystem state or at the minimum we should prefer {{/var/tmp}}.
