+1, even though I personally prefer Ant, most companies have switched to Maven,
and it has become more important for Tomcat's build to integrate seamlessly in
that build environment.

The general view of the current Tomcat devs on the dev list[1] was "Show us a
working Maven build for Tomcat trunk that produces the same output as 'ant
release' and we'll take a look. If it is better we'll use it."
To date, a working Maven build has not been produced.
Feel free to re-open this issue once such a build is available.
Please try to refrain from commenting on this issue unless you have something
substantive to add. If you want to continue any of the debate from [1], please
do so on the Tomcat dev list.
