Can not convert #UNKNOWN to a NodeList!

I'm using xalan 0.20 with xercesJ 1.02 I'm getting the following error:

org.apache.xalan.xslt.XSLProcessorException: Can not convert #UNKNOWN to a
NodeList!

when I try to process a document. Prior to this, I was using xalan 0.19 with
xerces 1.02
and it worked fine. I don't think I'm doing anything particularly strange. Code
follows:

XSLTInputSource xmldoc =
    new XSLTInputSource(new ByteArrayInputStream(_xmldoc.getBytes()));

XSLTInputSource xsldoc =
  new XSLTInputSource(new ByteArrayInputStream(_xsldoc.getBytes()));

XSLTResultTarget target =
    new XSLTResultTarget(new ByteArrayOutputStream());

XSLTProcessor p =
    XSLTProcessorFactory.getProcessor(new
org.apache.xalan.xpath.xdom.XercesLiaison());

p.process(xmldoc, xsldoc, target); // exception thrown here

xmldoc & xsldoc are both well formed XML documents. I would appreciate it if
anyone could
tell me what conditions obtain to produce the error and maybe some suggestions
how
I can circumvent this.

Thanks,
     Alex
