- Fix issue with apache.swc not containing classes
- Remove DISCLAIMER and incubating from the package source files
- Minor changes to build script
- Fixed packaging so that the SDK works with Flash Builder 4.7

The release candidate can be found here;
http://people.apache.org/~jmclean/Apache%20Flex%204.9.0%20Release%20Candidate%204/

Before voting please review the section,"What are the ASF requirements on approving a release?", at:
http://www.apache.org/dev/release.html#approving-a-release

Please vote to approve this release:

Hi,

I'm off on Saturday which is Friday your time. Yep I live in the future. :-)

It may be that the internet connection while slow is still usable and hopefully RC5 will be the last one.

Power wise should be no issues there's heaps of sun this time of year in the southern hemisphere.

Thanks,
Justin

And oh, the swfobject issue I had in earlier RCs have gone away now. Not
sure what fixed that.

I tested with the installer and Flex 4.9 RC6 looks good to me. I switched
up the sdk-installer-config.xml file to point to RC6 in case anyone else
wants to test.

Hi,

Satellite internet connection up and running, it's slow but working (0.3 Mbps down/0.1 Mbps up and 1 second ping time) so as long as I don't have to upload too many new RCs should be OK.

On that subject I may need someone to take over as Release Manager (or help package up and deploy the releases for me), for the next 2 weeks I'll have no mobile phone reception, be running off solar power and have an internet connection that works via a satellite link.

I didn't run it but looking quickly at the code, I've seen that no locales
have been set at startup, the selected index of the combo was set to the 1st
language element but for sure will never fire as a change event, only commit
value, so, how the default language is set, from the code, I've got no idea
yet, but I only had a quick look and at the moment i think that's may be the
reason why there's at startup a language issue, I need to test it to
validate what I'm thinking, as I told it, as soon as I'll be able to.

Hi,

I was checking the installer, and was starting to add a translation for the
es_ES locale. After compiling and launching it, There are lots of buttons
with empty labels. If you select a different locale and then back to
spanish, then the labels appear.

I remember reading something like this before the previous version was
released... is this the same issue? Is it supposed to be fixed before this
version is released?

I just built and ran the installer from sources on Win7.
FB4.7 accepted the results as a new SDK.
I created a new Flex project and it showed up in IE8 and FF15.
I didn't see any warnings or errors.

So, I would say we don't take the time to test all of the permutations of
configs. Adobe is not open next week so I will be working from home
and testing the installer is slow because of the internet speeds I get at home, so
the less downloading I need to do, the better.

Yes, we load all the download urls from an external config file:
http://incubator.apache.org/flex/sdk-installer-config.xml

My thinking is that we will have a different config for each FP/AIR
combination we want to support. Just show a simple dropdown at the launch
of the app (default to 11.4/3.4). Depending on what the user selects, we
grab the corresponding config url. A pretty straightforward
implementation. But this could wait until Installer 2.5 if we dont want to
hold up Flex 4.9 release.

Om

Hi,

The issue here is do we really want to default to FP 11.4 by default for non AIR projects? I can see there would be some complaints (from users) if we forced an update from FP 11.1 to 11.4. The SDK is not using any features from 11.2+ so I don't think we should force people to upgrade by default. I'd assume that people who use AIR are used to playing about with swf versions as support in the IDEs generally lags behind AIR releases.

Thanks,
Justin

I would say no. I wouldn't want to take the time to test this additional
functionality. Could the two URLs it will hit (based on the answer to #2)
be stored in an external .XML file? That would make it easier to folks to
use different versions and for us to update an already released installer if
Adobe goes and moves things around again.

I don't really have an opinion other than I think the FP and AIR SDKs should
use the same swf-version.

There two questions I would like resolved before embarking on the RC quest:

1. Would there be value in adding drop downs that let users switch between
FP swc versions and AIR sdk versions?

2. What are the default FP swc version and AIR sdk version that the
installer should download?

It might make it easier for you if Justin creates a symlink called
something like RC-current that he changes to point to the current RC.
Then you can use this URL for your installer without having to change it
every time there is a new RC.

Om,

Not sure I'll get to it tonight. But the pieces are that FB is supposed to
copy templates/index-template.html from the SDK folder when creating a new
project, then substitute in some variables and put the result in a .html
file in the bin-debug or whatever output folder for the project.

That .html file should reference swfobject.js which should have also been
copied into the output folder. Maybe you can examine the output .html and
.js files and determine what the problem is.

Yup it does. I see that all the files are there after the install. Not
sure what to make of the errors. Can you try the installer (from
utilitis/installer/trunk) and see if you can repro it?

Hi,

> Using the Installer :-)
Well that would be likely a bug with the installer :-)

makeApacheFlexForFlashBuilder.sh runs the swfobject-download target in the framework/download.xml file, that downloads http://swfobject.googlecode.com/files/swfobject_2_2.zip and extracts swfobject/expressInstall.swf and swfobject/swfobject.js to the templates directory.

Does the installer do that?

Thanks,
Justin

I've not see that issue nor can I reproduce it here. I tested several web based applications.

How are you packaging up RC4 into a SDK?

Thanks,
Justin

I still have the swfobject.js issue with web based flex applications. If
someone could take a look at that, it would be good.

BTW frameworks/build_framework.xml which is in the binary kit to build the
frameworks directories has the same issue. I entered a bug [1] yesterday.

Hi,

Compiles on OSX, make SDK for both FB6 and FB7 with no issues. Tested against a few small projects and one large project with no obvious issues.

However it a -1 from me as RC4 currently fails to compile with other locales (issue with experimental and apache projects).

Anyone have anything to add re this RC or should I close this vote and make another RC later today (my time)?

Thanks,
Justin

That's fine.

I don't think what is there is enough. Our own committers are still
confused.

Again I think we need more explanation.

I thought the process would be to vote on both and when both are accepted release them.

Fixed.

I think a link to the wiki page page of different locale/FP versions should be enough.

I tested (on OSX) all supported locales and they all compile. The checkin test don;t pass for all of them but that's more an issue with the tests than using a different locale.

Thanks,
Justin

-1 The SDK is almost there but now that the README mentions the installer
I will vote -1 until the installer is ready to go out at the same time.

I built the src kit and I built frameworks in the binary kit. I built FB
SDKs with both directories using
ide/flashbuilder/makeApacheFlexForFlashBuilder.sh and tested both in Flash
Builder 4.7 with mini AIR and FP apps. All checked out fine.

1. The README needs more work.

- The AIR download URL was edited to be 3.4 but this was added which is
inconsistent:

This version of Apache Flex was certified for use with AIR 3.1,
and is compatible
        with versions 3.1 through 3.5.

- Once fixed, we are saying we certified with FP11.1 and AIR 3.4 and we're
compatible with other versions. Is that what we decided we want to say?

- We need to be more specific about how you use different versions of
FlashPlayer and AIR. If I was reading the README I'd want to know what
that really means. What does it mean if I have a source kit? What does it
mean if I have a binary kit? Do I need to rebuild to use another version
and if so how do I do that?

- Same as above for non-en_US locales for both types of kit. The README
should include some information for the source kit, on how to build those
locales, and how to set the locale. The binary kit includes all the
locales. ant main does not build anything other than the default locale
(I assume that works if the default isn't en_US but I've never tried it
myself).

2. I removed the exec of the svn command line app from the batik build
file. I fixed the manifest for batik-all-flex.jar.
