[I] Alerts/Reports sending chart as csv fails with HTTP 500 [superset]

MatthewCurlerTAC opened a new issue, #41862:
URL: https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/41862

   ### Bug description

   When sending a chart as a csv, the task fails with an HTTP 500 error. This affects only the csv content type: the chart sends correctly as a png, pdf, and text. The chart is successfully exported to csv via the UI.

   The error occurs whether:
   - the task is scheduled as an alert or a report
   - With and without `RESULTS_BACKEND` configured

   The dataset in question is small (40 rows) and has no null values in any of the cells.

   To reproduce:

   1. Click **Settings** > **Alerts & Reports**
   2. Add new report: **+ Report**
   3. Under "Report Contents": 1) Content type = Chart; 2) Content format = csv
   4. Save and trigger report

   Similar bugs have been reported in the past:

   - https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/28595: resolved by the author, but the same behavior as I am experiencing was noted in [this comment](https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/28595#issuecomment-2163500008) and it is not clear that they have the same cause.
   - https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/36439 was an RLS issue - there is no RLS in my environment
   - https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/36682 was caused by a non-standard delimiter - I'm using ','/the default
   - https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/27499 was caused by NULLs in the dataset - there are no NULLs in this example.

   This same alert has runs successfully on Superset 5.0.0, with the caveat that have been some minor configuration changes (within `superset_config.py`), which I have attempted to reverse for troubleshooting.

Re: [I] Alerts/Reports sending chart as csv fails with HTTP 500 [superset]

Posted by "MatthewCurlerTAC (via GitHub)" <gi...@apache.org>.
MatthewCurlerTAC commented on issue #41862:
URL: https://github.com/apache/superset/issues/41862#issuecomment-4929462122

   I tested the patch by building superset with `SUPERSET_TAG=227b3a4`, corresponding to the merge commit into main. Sending a chart as a csv continues to generate `HTTP Error 500`. I think this issue needs to be reopened.

   <!-- Answer -->
   The most likely cause of your HTTP 500 is a **`SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE = True` + HTTP `WEBDRIVER_BASEURL` mismatch**. In your failing config you have:

   ```python
   SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE = True
   WEBDRIVER_BASEURL = "http://superset_app:8088/"  # HTTP, not HTTPS
   ```

   When the Celery worker calls the internal CSV endpoint, it attaches the session cookie to an HTTP request [[1]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/utils/csv.py#L90-L91). But because `SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE = True`, the browser/client layer drops the cookie on non-HTTPS connections. The CSV endpoint then receives an unauthenticated request and returns 500.

   This would also explain why PNG/PDF still work — those go through Playwright (which loads the full page over the same internal URL but handles cookies differently via the machine auth provider), while CSV uses a bare `urllib` request [[2]](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/utils/csv.py).

   **Fix — choose one:**

   1. **(Recommended)** Set `SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE = False` for the internal network (safe if your Superset workers and app are on a trusted Docker network):

      ```python
      SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE = False
      ```

   2. Or switch the internal base URL to HTTPS (requires the app container or a sidecar proxy to terminate TLS):

      ```python
      WEBDRIVER_BASEURL = "https://superset_app:8088/"
      ```

   **Additional things to verify:**

   - Confirm the worker can reach `http://superset_app:8088/health` (your 5.0.0 config used `http://superset:8088/` — if the service name changed, DNS resolution inside Docker may also be failing).
   - Check the *app server* logs (not the worker) around `16:01:41` for the actual 500 traceback — it will reveal whether the failure is an auth error, CSRF rejection, or something else entirely.
   - A recent PR added network timeouts to this code path [[3]](https://github.com/apache/superset/pull/41250), which would surface pre-existing auth failures faster rather than hanging indefinitely, but it isn't itself the cause of the 500.

   @nosumano20 does the linked PR from @durgaprasadml overlap at all with your approach? Would it be worth opening a PR with your patch(es)?

   Hi @MatthewCurlerTAC, thanks for the detailed report.

   I’d like to investigate this issue and work on a fix.

   I’ll reproduce the regression on the latest master, compare the current CSV report generation flow with the previous working implementation, identify the root cause, and prepare a minimal, production-ready fix along with regression tests to ensure scheduled CSV reports continue to work without affecting other report formats.

   I’ll share my findings and open a pull request once the fix is ready.

   [superset_csv_fix.zip](https://github.com/user-attachments/files/29761574/superset_csv_fix.zip)
   Man, I ran into this same headache last week. Turns out the csv serializer was tripping over the chart metadata buffer during the async task handoff. I patched the worker logic to handle the stream properly and it worked like a charm.

   - I have tested and sending as a csv fails with `SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE` being `True` and `False`. Same goes for Talisman config.
   - All other content types send successfully: the worker is able to communicate with app, successfully authenticate, and load the chart; this is something specific to the csv export.
   - The superset_app logs throw the same error regardless of the cookie_secure settings:
