I am running into this as well, particularly now that more and more people are
moving to PHP and we are seeing a lot of DOCUMENT_ROOT usage that is breaking
all over the place.

The code fix is pretty easy, override it manually for each site but if there was
a VIRTUAL_DOCUMENT_ROOT the authors could start taking this into account.
