[jira] [Created] (TRAFODION-497) LP Bug: 1352479 - [FIRST N] syntax in manual is a little confusing

Alice Chen created TRAFODION-497:
------------------------------------

Summary: LP Bug: 1352479 - [FIRST N] syntax in manual is a little confusing
                 Key: TRAFODION-497
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/TRAFODION-497
             Project: Apache Trafodion
          Issue Type: Bug
          Components: documentation
            Reporter: David Wayne Birdsall
            Assignee: Susan Sandstrom

In the Trafodion SQL reference manual http://docs.trafodion.org/Trafodion_SQL_Reference_Manual_0.8.0.pdf, the syntax for the [first n] and [last n] modifiers is a bit confusing. The problem is that square bracket characters are meta-characters in our syntax diagrams, but for [first n] and [last n] they are meant literally. We're stuck with that unfortunately, but perhaps we could make the manual more clear by noting right in the discussion for [first n]/[last n] that the square brackets are required. Perhaps we could include an example right there in the discussion.
