Log4j on IRC

Would it be a good idea to have an IRC channel dedicated to log4j? This
way if someone has a quick question and someone else is online, it could be
answered efficiently without clogging up everyone's mailbox. I'm not
recommending anything fancy like FAQ bots and stuff. Just an IRC net that
doesn't mind the traffic.

On a couple occasions I've started a channel #log4j just to see what would
happen. I wasn't overwhelmed with traffic.

The one we use for #turbine is always fairly active, a lot of our
decisions get made in IRC actually because we sometimes have
10+ people there. We should probably make a point of logging the
discussion on a daily basis.

I don't think Jon would mind if there was a #log4j channel
on the server, but he can answer for himself :-)

Various projects have tried this (#cocoon was the last I noticed), and
they always seem to peter out.

How about proposing a #jakarta IRC channel for all apache projects?
Either on a network like openprojects.net, or perhaps Jon Stevens could
re-open the IRC server on cvs.working-dogs.com, where the PMC meeting
was once held.

Hello Paul,

IRC is cool even if can be a huge time sink. Email has many advantages. It is persistent, mailings lists are archived, and you can take your time when replying. IRC does not have these qualities.

I already spend too much of my time reading/writing email. A new communication channel is unlikely to help my situation. Otherwise you are most welcome to try. Regards, Ceki
