ErrorLog piping

I've got logfile piping down for CustomLog, but ErrorLog is presenting a
special problem.

Here's the scoop, I've got a server running with many virtualhosts. Each
virtualhost needs to have its own logs. With CustomLog, I pipe it to a
program that figures out (from the canonical hostname) where to put the
log line. Works rather well, and frees up a nice chunk of file
descriptors.

But there's no [apparent] way to prepend the canonical hostname to each
error log entry as can be done with other kinds of logs, and then there's
STDERR from CGI's ...

Or is there a way to do it with mod_perl or a code hack?
