[jira] [Created] (ACCUMULO-1363) Investigate Leveraging commons-daemon for launching services

Christopher Tubbs created ACCUMULO-1363:
-------------------------------------------

Summary: Investigate Leveraging commons-daemon for launching services
                 Key: ACCUMULO-1363
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ACCUMULO-1363
             Project: Accumulo
          Issue Type: Task
          Components: dist
            Reporter: Christopher Tubbs
             Fix For: 1.6.0

Leveraging commons-daemon means better user experience. commons-daemon is baked into the distribution of RHEL and CentOs since at least as far back as version 5 (as jakarta-commons-daemon), and in Fedora (as apache-commons-daemon) as far back as at least 12. I'm guessing it's been around in Ubuntu for awhile too.

If commons-daemon allows us to simplify per-node startup, shutdown, and service monitoring, we might want to leverage it in our packaging to make it easy for users to deploy and run Accumulo.
