http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=42097

           Summary: the XHTML doctype only allows a subset of XHTML
           Product: Lenya
           Version: Trunk
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: other
            Status: NEW
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P2
         Component: Miscellaneous
        AssignedTo: dev@lenya.apache.org
        ReportedBy: nettings@apache.org

many users report spurious validation errors when using the XHTML doctype,
especially when using it with advanced editors such as FCK or TinyMCE.
for some reason the XHTML doctype only allows a subset of the XHTML spec without
ever saying so.
this should be fixed for 1.4.

Can't we postpone that to 1.4.1? I have the feeling that it might not be as easy
as one might think, especially because various editors are involved.

See also bug #31754 . Some of the spurious errors may be because one or more of
hundreds of files fails to specify xhtml.

+1
i think we have to, because i've run into no end of problems with bxe...

tinymce otoh will not work very well with just xhtml-basic.
if there was a stable xhtml backend format, i could write pre- and
post-processing transformations for tiny, but as it is now it's kinda a moving
target.

FCKeditor doesn't like basic either. In fact it likes to do a couple of things
beyond the full spec. Through several changes I now have it saving for
everything I've tried.

How are you generating problems with BXE?

(In reply to comment #3)
> How are you generating problems with BXE?

i change src/modules/xhtml/resources/schemas/xhtml.rng to read:

<grammar ...
<include href="fallback://lenya/resources/schemas/lenya.rng"/>
<include href="fallback://lenya/modules/xhtml/resources/schemas/xhtml/xhtml.rng">
  <define name="html">
...

now when i open bxe and try to make a word italic, bxe's client-side validator
kicks in with "<em/> is not allowed as a child of <p/>". this happens with
pretty much everything.
can you get bxe to work with xhtml1-trans?

Yeah, I see what you're doing now. By the way, with just basic the subscript and
superscript buttons don't work.

I did find a problem with html being defined twice with the inclusion of
frames.rng. However, fixing this did not fix the problem.
