This looks like something I've seen on a FreeBSD box.  Is anything stopping
spamd from spawning during the test?  Perhaps some iptables-esque firewalls or
something similar?

I have a feeling you'll find that 3.3.2 works perfectly as well.  I haven't
figured out why spamd can't spawn but that's my current thought of the crux of
the problem.

No, I stopped the firewall - same result (BTW 3.3.1 is working on the same
