Broken ubuntu instances

Hi All,
Slightly off topic, but hoping someone can help. I had some users attempt
to do a "do-release-upgrade" on a handful of ubuntu 12.04 instance and now
they are broken and will not boot.

My hypervisor is XS 6.5. The 12.04 instances had been setup as Other PV 64
(this is from when my hosts were XS 6.02). The error I get is:

I tried changing the type to "ubuntu 14.04 64" and also to "other 64". In
both of those cases the machine starts and is stuck at the "bios" screen
after it says "Boot Device: Hard Disk - success."

The root disks are on NFS so I am able to mount them elsewhere and could
try to fix grub, but not exactly sure how. If any of you have dealt with
this I would appreciate some pointers. Thanks,
Carlos
