Basics abt Performace Testing??

Hi,
   I am new to the group, we are using JMeter to check the performance of the system, I am new to Load/ performance testing and i am exploring JMeter now, Can any one pl guide me wht are all the things to be done if we go for performace testing. Kindly send some tips for "Test to break" the performance of our product.
