during installation apache server was not installed. The apache monitor was 
installed. No Apache2 in the Services Management Console.

OS was Windows Vista Home Edition 32-bits system on a Pentium 4 cpu.

You forgot to mention what error was thrown.

"no install log found" (from your somewhat wordy summary) is trivial, follow
the directions at

http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/binaries/win32/TROUBLESHOOTING.html

to get some additional detail about the error.
