How to get the parameter values of portlet defined in xreg file inside VM

Hi All,
I need to get the value of one parameter that is defined in the xreg file of
the portlet. How to get inside the VM?

Is there any class to be called. I tried
$portlet_instance.getAttribute("paramname") but it doesn't work.. 

Any suggestions ?
