Whats in a name (or Group-id's anyone?)
Ok,
I'm noticing that in Maven the group id's are not getting fleshed out
for our projects. For instance in Math.

> <extend>../../jakarta-commons/project.xml</extend>
> <name>Math</name>
> <id>commons-math</id>
> <currentVersion>0.1-dev</currentVersion>
> <inceptionYear>2003</inceptionYear>
> <logo>/images/math.gif</logo>
> <shortDescription>
> Jakarta Commons Math
> </shortDescription>
this results for one, in projects having the same group-id and id in the
Maven repository, for instance:
http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/math/dependencies.html
and in the maven repository for example:
http://www.ibiblio.org/maven/commons-httpclient/
Shouldn't we really start setting our group id's?
http://maven.apache.org/reference/user-guide.html#Naming%20Conventions
>
> <id>foo</id>
> <name>The Grand Master Foo</name>
> <groupId>org.foo.bar</groupId>
for instance in math:
> <project>
> <extend>../../jakarta-commons/project.xml</extend>
> <name>Math</name>
> <id>commons-math</id>
> <groupId>org.apache.commons.math</groupId>
> <currentVersion>0.1-dev</currentVersion>
> <inceptionYear>2003</inceptionYear>

> </shortDescription>
This would end up in the repository under:
http://www.ibibilio.org/maven/<org.apache.commons.math>/<type>/commons-math-<version>.<ext>
Eventualy aven is going to process these group-id's into directory
structures:
http://www.ibibilio.org/maven/org/apache/commons/math/<type>/commons-math-<version>.<ext>
which would keep all the commons code grouped and well organized once
this occurs.

That's what I figured. With Maven pushing along and the
repository@apache project continuing negotiations, it's probably best to
continue with the current system until things get a bit more settled.

I talked with Jason, he suggested we hold off on this sort of change
until they work out the design and implement the new repository
architecture for Maven 2.0. Specifically because that could change what
the groupId would look like.

tough call, isn't jakarta just a "java foundry" at apache or an actual
project. I suspect this is why it is not actually used in the package names.
org.apache.commons...
org.apache.catalina...
org.apache.bcel...
...
This is also what other projects outside of jakarta seem to misenterpret
(and even projects within). Guess thats what all that hubbub about PMC's
is these days.

I think that all of Jakarta should deploy under groupId
jakarta.apache.org.
It would eliminate about 1/4 of the directories on ibiblio right now.
That's an exaggeration, but I'm sure you get my point.
