Velocity Reference problem

Hi friends,

I was trying to refer to a java object java.util.Date from the
HelloWorld example.

My velocity log file reads like this.

org.apache.velocity.runtime.exception.ReferenceException: reference :
template=screens/HelloWorld.vm :$date is not a valid reference.

Can anybody help ?
