Community installer stats for NetBeans 27
Hi All,
Now that the release of NetBeans 28 is in progress, and as my final
installer-related task, I've taken a snapshot of the download
statistics for the NetBeans 27 community installers. Figures for
NetBeans 26 were shared previously -
https://lists.apache.org/thread/g8cflo6n10dpvs994nlf039m5ofdo30t
Windows exe x86_64 307,688 (71.76%)
macOS pkg x86_64 19,496 (4.55%)
macOS pkg arm64 85,025 (19.83%)
Linux deb x86_64 10,852 (2.53%)
Linux deb arm64 2,183 (0.51%)
Linux rpm x86_64 3,507 (0.82%)
TOTAL 428,751 (compared to 228,055 for NetBeans 26)
Figures from GitHub API via live view at
https://tooomm.github.io/github-release-stats/?username=friends-of-apache-netbeans&repository=netbeans-installers
Interesting to note the substantial increase from NetBeans 26 - as I
said in the previous email, that was always the slowest 3 month period
for installer usage.
Interesting also to note the significant increase in the proportion of
macOS arm64 downloads - 5.70% to 19.83%
As last time, enjoy your stats with a good pinch of salt! :-)
Best wishes,
Neil

I did try to keep the arch package up to date by opening merge requests synced with our releases.
But the original package maintainers are likely no longer active, e.g the NB 27 update wasn't integrated anymore:
https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/netbeans/-/merge_requests/?sort=created_date&state=all&author_username=mbien&first_page_size=20
(so I didn't open one for NB 28)

Just adding some stats from Snap packages.
It is not downloads, but "active" users, that means the number of unique
installs, that's reported back to Snap infrastructure:
We have 31,033 weekly active users, 75% of those are already received
NetBeans 28
All of those we have 224 of those who are following our RC builds as well.
Our arm64 users is still minimal 237

It would be interesting, but we're limited to the information
available via the GitHub API for release artefacts. I don't think
this information is available, although I haven't looked at the raw
data recently.
The ASF stats for source and binary zips theoretically has location
data by country, but it's definitely not accurate. I've seen it show
massive download counts for some countries, and none for others. The
UK count has sometimes been less than I've downloaded myself! :-)
Best wishes,
Neil

Indeed, really great (and interesting). Would be really interesting to know
also what the geographies, i.e., locations, are.

Thanks Eirik. It's great to see the project we put our time into
getting a good level of usage, and a big thanks to everyone who
contributes.
I did want to add that the community installers themselves were never
part of my own volunteer work on NetBeans. As has been said before,
they have always been partly or fully funded, and I would not have
been able to put in the level of work, infrastructure and additional
support without that.
Now that they've migrated to FoAN, I hope they continue to thrive. As
I said in the opening email, this thread should be my final installer
related task.
Best wishes,
Neil

The installer is clearly a success! The stats themselves are also very helpful; I always found it hard to parse the Apache servers' download statistics.
It is interesting to see that there's at least 300,000 active NetBeans users on Windows alone--and that only counts the ones that decided to upgrade for this particular release, and who used the installer rather than ZIP etc.
All this volunteer work really benefits *a lot* of users. Thanks Neil, and all the other contributors!
