Reducing the number of Jira Posts to the Mailinglist?
Hi,
just wanted to know if it would be possible to reduce the number of posts sent to the mailing list from Jira? Currently I do notice that the enormous amount of unimportant Jira posts (change notifications, status changes, etc.) is making me doing bulk-deletes on the list and not following any threads anymore.
What do you other guys think about this?

Well that would be an option for anyone with an Exchange server ... most others to these filters on client-side and people using these would probably have trouble when accessing the list on a smartphone. I actually turned of email-push notifications on my smartphone because of these emails, because they were totally driving me nuts.

Hi,
Easy solution is to use an email filter all JIRA emails come from jira@apache.org.
I do and I probably generate most of the emails.
Thanks,
Justin

JIRA automatically adds a user to the watch list when they comment on an
issue. That would ensure an email directly to their email if when there is
some action on that ticket.
One could manually choose to watch a ticket as well.

I believe so. Having a new mailing list will give us that benefit of not
spamming the dev list. At the same time committers can choose to add
themselves to the new list or just 'watch' the issues they care about.
Personally, I think hard when I do bulk updates in JIRA with the fear of
spamming the dev list. I ended up creating a filter on my gmail client,
but now I have to remember to check that directory once every few days to
make sure I don't miss some important ones(for me)
Thanks,

I'm not sure other projects have a backlog of 30K issues and wonderful folks
like you who are willing to wade through them.

While I agree that filtering should work, it is possible for us to request a
new mailing list. It requires a vote.
But I think an important question is: should committers be allowed to
"ignore" JIRA emails? Sure, we can't control what you filter out from your
email client, but hopefully you will work on JIRA issues someday and will
want to see other folk's comments on those issues, even months after you
worked on it. Do we know if committers who don't sign up for JIRA emails

which might also filter the watch notification email?

It's set to dev@flex.apache.org but it's from jira@flex.com.au, filter on the from address. Even web based client emails can do filtering so it's shouldn't be that hard.
Thanks,
Justin

or I've lost my mind and it's sent to "dev@flex.apache.org" however the from is using labels overtop with people's names with the sending email of Jira@apache.org and it has a replyto of "dev@flex.apache.org".

My Jira emails show up from "dev@flex.apache.org". I currently just filter them from their prefix [jira].

Does the dev-digest emails send updates for Jira too?

+1 for the separate Jira mailing list. I believe this is where we've lost some Dev subscribers was due to our Jira mail.

It would be nice to have a 'jira@flex.apache.org' list, with a Reply-To set
to 'dev@flex.apache.org', so we don't miss any replies made to the emails
instead of in the comments...
Interested in talking to INFRA about that?
